It's a lot harder to find examples than I thought! Most examples that came to mind seem to just miss the 70s boat. Top 10 songs released by over 65 year olds is a lot easier in comparison.
Last ten minutes has been spent looking up artists on Wikipedia, struggling at maths, then going "nope, they were only 68...". Then rinse and repeat.
Let's see I've got: -Queenie Eye, New, Early Days, Save Us - Paul McCartney -Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die - Willie Nelson -I liked that Buckingham McVie album released earlier this year - Christine McVie is in her 70s so I guess that counts, so I'll pick In My Word from that Do I even know any other songs written by someone older than 70? If we include over 65, then the rest would be filled in by David Bowie (Blackstar, Lazarus) and Stevie Nicks (Starshine, Belle Fleur).
A few others; Bob Dylan - Duquesne Whistle Etta James - Cigarettes and Coffee Johnny Cash - Hurt Leonard Cohen - Leaving the Table Tom Jones - Soul of A Man Paul Simon - Wristband Blondie - Fun
Jones is a great call. Half of Praise and Blame could be there. That whole album is stupid good. Willie Nelson's cover of "The Scientist" would absolutely show up too.
Shit how the hell did I forget Loretta Lynn put out Van Lear Rose at 72. Half that damn album would be in play. Dr. John's Locked Down is a killer post-70 record, too.
Yeah I came to mention Paul Simon's "Wristband" as well. Also, "Rewrite" from the album before that. Chuck Berry's last album wasn't that good but "Big Boys" was probably the best song on there.
I liked all 3 (and loved Darker) but couldn't think of a particular song that really stuck out when I was thinking about this.
....anyway, continuing my Beatles journey with Help! About three songs in, already this one feels more adventurous somehow but I can't put my finger on why that is. Maybe it'll come to me. A bit of a folk influence here which is cool
I wonder how much time they spent on lyrics. They haven't been bad so far but sometimes they aren't especially expanded upon
Yellow submarine is a genuinely great song. It's been literal years since I heard it last but wtf it is great Edit: enjoying Revolver very very much rn, probably among my top three of the ones I've listened to during this (re) familiarization
