as strung out as John can appear at times, he is the one that tries to push getting an order for the album and to do the live show while paul just nods and says yeah sure maybe i guess
I finished this last night. It took me about a week and I loved every second. The digital retouching gets a bit distracting at some points, but for the most part it looks great and the content itself is unreal. It's probably my favorite thing I've watched this year so far.
between this and todd haynes’ velvet underground my two favorite films of the year might be rock docs
This has really stayed with my thoughts since I finished it. I went through my Beatles phase way back in high school, so this is probably the most extensive time I have had with their music since then. Let it Be is probably middle of the road in terms of their albums, better than the early stuff but not near the heights of the mid-to-late career, but here the songs become so infectious because you see how they were formed. Anyone who has been in a band can relate to that feeling of tedium until things really start to click and then it really does stop feeling like work.
Them going crazy on the instruments while Yoko is wailing on the mic is a perfect encapsulation of getting cabin fever in the studio and creating chaos to try and shake it off.
I viewed it more as them not vibing on anything enough to be productive, so they just created some noise out of boredom and not really giving a shit haha.
I have always been more of a Lennon fan, but McCartney's dictatorial ways are almost necessary given how many directions they were being pulled in. If not, Lennon would have left with Ono earlier and Harrison would have started his solo career. Ringo wasn't going to step in and keep them on a schedule.

I'm only an hour into this, but loving it so far. It's just a fascinating look into the creative process.
Been watching this and really enjoying it. Amazing to see them interact in such high definition. Really feels like you're in the room with them. That one line "Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman, but she was another man" has been repeating itself in my head though. A non-sequitur that carries unfortunate subtext now.
I finished this a few days ago and haven't been able to stop thinking about it. So many moments when they were just jamming and goofing around reminded me of my own friends. Some standouts - the conversation between John and Paul that was secretly recorded about the power dynamics of the band, John and Paul trying out different accents while playing Two of Us, the entire end-sequence on the roof... Simply incredible stuff.
I think I’ll start this tomorrow but I just finished Yesterday and seriously loved that movie. Was so fun… not sure why it doesn’t seem like a bigger movie than it should have been.
