A place pretty close to me got a Michelin rec (closest thing to star without getting a star). I kinda wanna try it now. I love a good southern style fish camp spot. Proud to know the best in the world like a 10 minute drive away.

For those who don't know Fish Camps are pretty cheap utilitarian seafood restaurants attached to wholesale fish markets, usually serving fried fish, po boys, ect. It's like the seafood equivalent to a butcher's shop that also has a deli. Florida has tons of them.

Pro cooking. Anti spending money on absurd food when a food sandwhich hits just as hard. Anti pasta, anti seafood that isn’t raw or fried

The food is just a plot device. Advertising in Mad Men, drugs in Breaking Bad, the mafia in The Sopranos. What is interesting is the characters and their dynamics.

Baseball is the most boring sport on Earth but look how exciting Moneyball is.

The show makes the food interesting too, though

No but I understand the point you are trying to make, I just think it’s silly to write off fine dining

How much better can food be than something else? Beyond the physical function that we eat, is a 200 dollar meal really ten times better than a 20 dollar meal?

I tried to get into wine when I was younger because I thought it was something I was supposed to do, but then I realized it tastes bad and I can get Mountain Dew for much cheaper and without going to jail for mixing it with driving.

It depends on the meal. I've had incredible $20 meals and I've had incredible $200 meals. I've been disappointed countless times by $20 meals, and I've been disappointed maybe once or twice by a "fancy" restaurant

I just don't really believe in fancy stuff. I wear gym shorts and t-shirts whenever I can. When I was buying a car I told them I wanted four wheels and a steering wheel. We are in the middle of buying a house and I said the only thing I care about is proximity to work and access to a pool.

There is something perverse about spending hundreds of dollars on these little graham crackers with exotic cheese on them. I also believe that to some extent people rave about the food precisely because of the price.

  13. Sure but those plot devices are chosen because they embody certain characteristics and contradictions that are ripe for deeper examination and conducive to interesting relationships. But either way I think it is different when the plot device is art, if I thought filmmaking was stupid I think I'd be hard pressed to enjoy something about a filmmaker pushing themselves to the brink for their work

Food/drink may be the only thing that I really splurge on. I have my dumb physical media collection but aside from that, any expendable money that I am not putting in savings is going towards enjoying food.

If I were to take anything from the particular subject matter of The Bear, it is the extreme differences between these working class people and the rich people who they need to entertain with all the bells and whistles. It is even more extreme in real-life fancy restaurants, staffed with immigrants of questionable documentation having to provide service for the rich people who voted to deport them. So far, though, The Bear has not explored that as much.

What makes The Bear a good show, as well as the other shows I mentioned, is the characters and the relationships between them. There isn't that much different between The Bear struggling to stay open and Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce trying to survive after they lose the tobacco client. Most of the time, when you ask people their favorite parts of a show, it is something between the characters that is mostly removed from the actual plot itself. The hostile takeover in Succession can get a little confusing, but what I am transfixed on is the way the family rallies together to try and manipulate people.

It isn't that the cooking itself is bad, but the things going around the cooking is the fun stuff.

At this particular place, baked ziti light on the sauce.

In a few weeks I am going to New Orleans and part of the reason I go multiple times a year is because they have this homemade creamy white wine sauce that they make penne in and it is the most delicious thing I have ever had. I asked for the recipe once and once he started telling me I realized I would never recreate it.

It is a correct statement. Alcohol is one of the most overrated things in our civilization.

Alcohol is good. Food is better and I am fighting hard to get you to understand that, so I don't think that the alcohol debate will go anywhere.

Alcohol is good when you are a teenager and you need some confidence to talk to people at a party. After 22 it is time to get serious.
