Almost all italian sandwich spots like that always got Italian Beef, Sausage & Peppers, Chicken & Peppers, Chicken Parm, Meatball, and sometimes Eggplant Parm and Veal cutlet subs on the menu. It's the standard.

The wedding episode was surprisingly wholesome. I was just waiting for the blow up, but it never came. It was pretty refreshing.

 

Wedding episode kind of halted the pace of the season, but was otherwise nice. I enjoyed the obviously ridiculous dimensions of the table

 

I finished the season today. Overall, it was very good. The characters are really starting to feel lived in, but they were already ahead of most shows when they started.

Regarding Carmy's decision, I really hope it isn't something you see more and more in prestige dramas, where the end of a season suggests a major change only for it to revert after a few episodes of the next season. Coincidentally, it was Moss-Bachrach's other show Girls that would do this with a character or two every season, only for it to revert back. It is like they want the rules of a sitcom without being a sitcom.

It just doesn't seem like a natural thing for him to move away from being a chef. Just because you have trauma tied up in your career does not mean you are without those gifts, and why start over at the wrong end of 30? Getting older means having more and more lost friends and family weighing on your shoulders and we all spend a significant amount of our lives learning how to balance mourning, honoring them, and moving on. Obviously a brother's suicide at such a young age is going to be more traumatic than something like your grandma dying in her nineties, but if anything reconnecting with those people is a more productive way to keep his brother's essence alive than to run.

 

I have a lot of issues with the last two seasons, Carmy stepping away from cooking isn't one of them. He pretty much abandoned his restaurant the minute he started dating Claire in season 2. I think he was lazer focused on cooking all his life and once he realized there's joy in other things (as opposed to the incredible stress of being a chef) the cracks started forming.

 

I love the decision for him to step away, and I hope they live in it and really do let Richie, Syd and Sugar make it work

 

All of these male antiheroes are the same. Cooking for Carmy is the same as pitching copy for Don Draper or making meth for Walter White or running the company like Roman Pierce. It is a very American ideal about getting your identity through work and Carmy is not going to be happy selling mattresses or putting up drywall.

I'm not reading this thread yet b/c I'm still on episode 8, but my goodness the emotional payoff of this season has been unparalleled so far. If someone could explain to me why I cried 3 separate times during Sophie I would really be helped by that. The depth of the inter-personal relationships is totally alive. This show totally fools me into thinking it's all real again and again. Also, the (relative) calm of this season in juxtaposition with 1 & 2 is fascinating. Not expecting it to stay that way, but it's a great juxtaposition.

The thing that is important about his ultimate trajectory is that cooking is an inherently kind and nurturing act. The restaurant Michelin stars and balancing a budget are all things that get in the way of that, but the simple act of taking ingredients to make a dish and then to serve that to someone to sustain their life is about love and protection. That is part of why the scene of him cooking for his mother is in there; we expect mothers to cook for their children, and this usually exists even in to their adulthood. For her to accept the meat and for Carmy to make it with love and care is part of why he wants the JLC is definitely “acting”-acting in ep 9 that is taking me out a bit but the actual dialogue is fucking me up

 

It definitely feels like an awards moment but White's naturalism in trying to hold it all in sells the scene.

I saw one review of this season that said "a collection of Emmy acting reels loosely weaved together". I was like man I see where how they're coming to that thought, but damn that is harsh.

 

I don't know 90 percent of their extended family except I remember Saul Goodman from last season.

 

I thought it was delightful and added some nice color to Sugar's character. Brie was funny!
