I finally caught up on this, I really, really loved the first season but I think 2 is a pretty massive step down.
So much of the season being dedicated to opening the restaurant just wasn't as remotely interesting to me. And The moment with Carmy accidentally breaking up with Claire while he stuck in the walk-in is one of the most irritating moments I've had with TV since Game of Thrones ended, felt absurdly half-baked
Yeah, I prefer season one but love season 2, not a massive step down. And I think everything with the locked freezer was super predictable and felt phony and forced. Maybe my only real complaint with the entire show
I should say I still very much enjoyed the season, but I have way more conflicted feelings than I did with the first, which I consider the best season of TV I've seen since, maybe, Breaking Bad Season 4? It dials things up in a big way that just feels a little less sincere to me. Even episode 7 which managed to make me cry as I'm firmly on team Richie, still had moments that felt like something I'd see in a workplace motivational video Thinking about the deep dish run and the guy training Richie's monologue about service in particular here.
the writing and performances certainly were. some of the directing took me out a bit, specifically the interstitials of dutch angles flying through the chicago skyline, but overall an improvement.
I have slight preference for season 1, but mostly because I'm a sucker for the whole 'team coming together to make the shop work' aspect of the story and that was more fun for lack of a better word than kind of siloing everyone off on their own self discovery journeys. But quality wise they were basically identical and I'd call xmas and Richie the two best episodes of the show so far.
