Been listening to an excellent "Sad Beach Boys" playlist lately, lol. The trajectory and lore of this band is so fascinating to read about.
for anyone curious about the recent leaks the songs marked Life Suite are essential listening. eight linked songs Brian was working on for the final Beach Boys album for years, only 3 of them ended up on Radio Stained Glass Window is sublime, maybe one of his last masterpieces
seriously considering going to see Al Jardine play later this year, tickets are kinda pricey but I doubt I'm getting another chance to catch a Beach Boy live especially after I leave the city
Jokermen have finally reached Smile (in Feb i’m behind) and it is definitely giving me a better appreciation for the record. As a whole I still put it about middle of the pack, but Cabinessence, Surf’s Up, Heroes and Villains, and Good Vibrations are all top Brian songs
the big 60! gonna have to throw it on today, of all of the greatest albums of all time this is def one of the ones that is most important to me personally as well. just breathtaking even now
Hell yeah it does. What a career Ricky Fataar has had. Beach Boy for one of their best albums. Member of The Rutles. Drumming with Bonnie Raitt for decades. That's a great journeyman career.
and he's on the best pop song ever, Message to My Girl by Split Enz! yeah Holland rips, Carl's finest moment in the Boys
obviously his vocals on GOK are perfect for that song, if a bit limited compared to what he could do a few years on, and his songs on Surf's Up are impressive for pretty much his first songwriting efforts (I especially love Feel Flows). but he's basically the bandleader on Holland, trying to hold together the Brian-Dennis and Mike-Al sides of the band and integrate Ricky and Blondie at the same time, and he somehow did it and turned out an incredibly cohesive album! from a creative standpoint, easily his high point imo ...also The Trader is his best vocals on record, sorry not sorry. I Can Hear Music a close second
That's part of the appeal of Holland and most of that era, really. They have the ambition and vocal sophistication of The Beach Boys and some muscle as a band from time on the road, but they're not at all polished as writers so you get really interesting tension out of that.
