Technically, there's a difference between what Nolan may have intended and could potentially happen. Since he's not shown actually becoming Batman, there's an infinite number of possibilities if someone wanted to make a follow up film to Nolan's franchise. Not saying anyone would, but the option is there.

I saw this last night and it was weird how people were being obnoxious during the entire movie, but for some reason didn't react to the Joker scene? Like, they were screaming "get that pussy" during every Catwoman scene, but had no thoughts or comments about the Joker. Did people just not realize it was supposed to be him?
