the little Caesar’s ad in the movie really took me out because all I could think about is Bruce Wayne eating a Batman calzone
I also pretty easily like this as a whole more than Dark Knight, tbh, but I also have never been as into that one as a lot of people. This gothic, pulp-adjacent take is much more in line with how I like Batman than Nolan’s sensibilities (which I like much more in Inception and Tenet than on Batman).
this is right there with TDK for me. I’ll need to let the hyper bias die down, but today is the first day not seeing it since Thursday and it’s all I can think about. I’m just in my garage blasting something in the way. The way that comes in after Bruce stares at the kid, and follows him on his drive home at dusk is so goddam perfect.
LINK US Absolute 10/10 for me. His chin in the cowl is picture perfect and the way he moves with civilians vs baddies was also spot on for how I always mentally pictured the comic. Zoe was great. Wanted more Penguin but can’t be picky. Dano was aces, but Ledger’s Joker is such an impossible act to follow. It’s sort of unfortunate. That level of surprise in a villain’s performance and abilities just doesn’t really exist in a superhero movie any more. Beyond Thanos and MBJ in Black Panther, the tales are either cookie cutter villain or outright psycho that can go too far or not far enough. But again, I liked it. He never made it look easy or perfect, even when he was killing people. Hope we get more from him too. Also, when the Batmobile finally fired up out of that lean-to, I involuntarily yelled “oh fuck!”. I haven’t done that in a theater in years. Don’t cheat yourself - see IMAX if you can.
Saw this at 11am — some quick bulleted thoughts… Really enjoyed Pattinson’s Batman quite a bit — thought he carried the role well, and his Bat-voice worked Shame about his Bruce Wayne, who is kept to a sketch, and is basically “Wide-Eyed Emo Kid at a Funeral” Definitely liked Serkis as Alfred, and would love to see more out of him in a sequel Wright and Pattinson are great as a Bats + Gordon duo Zoe Kravitz absolutely owns her role as Catwoman — she really came off as a megastar here. The new Batmobile ABSOLUTELY RULES and the audio was AWESOME in Dolby Looking forward to more of Ferrell’s Penguin Dano doing Riddler as Zodiac Mc4Chan was a choice, and it hit for me more than it missed. His performance was strong, even if I feel the interpretation is a bit misguided Really, the worst thing that this movie is going to have for it is that Reeve’s version is not an evolution as we had from Burton -> Nolan. It’s more a refined version of Nolan’s Batman, sort of a more-self-serious cousin to it. Also: VERY WEIRD that my theater had a lot of kids in it. THEY GONNA BE WARPED. All and all, I gave it a 4/5 on Letterboxd, and I hold to it. A good sit.
Can anyone explain to me a small, weird moment before the car chase with the Penguin and the batmobile? It’s such an awesome moment of buildup. We see everyone respond to it in such a great way then the batmobile just kind of… stalls? I’ve seen it twice and don’t understand what’s happening there.
I figured he stalled it but it also gives Penguin a chance to actually get going otherwise it looked like Batman was close enough to just ram him lol.
It stalled for sure. That was another awesome little detail for me: sometimes it doesn’t all go perfectly, so he has to fire up the engine again. He’s still learning and building that damn thing anyway. One thing I wish they had gotten into just a BIT more: Riddler was a forensic accountant seemingly for Renewal, right? That’s how he knew there was so much cash going to bad people, or had a gripe about it. And Alfred mentions that Bruce needs to sit down to go over the books. But we never see him do it - even a renewed interest in where his family money is going would have been a great lead in to the next movie.
Saw it with friends again today and liked it much more. Bruce is such a dick to Alfred though. I love that it feels like it was filmed in the 90s at times.
