Spoiler-free thoughts: Overall, thought it was very impressive, with some faults. I’d rate it alongside “Batman Begins” as a solid starter to the series that needs a little ironing out (and condensing). The good: Right off the rip, Pattinson kicks ass as Batman. The press shots of him in the suit I thought looked a little goofy. But it looks great onscreen. I loved Bats being an actual detective with Gordon. The main cast - Kravitz, Wright, Turturro, Farrell and (mostly) Dano- all very good. I loved that most of it felt practical and not a CGI fest. The action scenes were shot so well and a shaky cam fest. Also, no Martha and Thomas death scene - always a plus. - Negatives - It’s Matt Reeves, so of course it’s super self serious. Like, at least let Bruce smile once in this. There are a few good jokes, and not that I want to be a Marvel quipfest, but it takes itself so seriously that it’s sometimes a bit much (but thankfully does not go into oppressive “Joker” territory). Bruce Wayne is a real angsty weiner. There’s one scene in particular where I felt his standoffishness made Pattinson look uncomfortably stiff. Dano’s taking some Jesse Eisdenberg-as-Luthor swings and sometimes it’s a little too goofy. By far, this is the darkest Batman movie. I won’t say “This ain’t your daddy’s Batman,” but when a F-word gets dropped 10 minutes in, it sets the tone. The climax also kind of made go “Wow, we’re really going there.” It’s not a kids movie at all. That’s not really speaking to its quality. Just wanted to get it out there. Anyway, as said, it’s a very good start. Like “The Dark Knight,” I think it has a solid foundation to build on.
I always thought one of the things that made The Dark Knight fantastic was the foundation that Batman Begins built, so that’s reassuring.
As much as I’m theoretically sick of grimdark, grown up Batman, nothing in the marketing or that At the Movies with Zilla review (which I always appreciate a ton!) makes me think this’ll be anything less than my favorite Batman film. If we’re getting a Batman who doesn’t smile, I love that he’s less a hyper masculine “can beat anyone with enough planning” dork and more of a tortured, messy, sexy emo boy. (Seriously, give this Bruce a Robin by movie 3!) And, I’m glad Riddler gets a bit “too goofy” sometimes, even if it’s in an unintentional way. In short, let’s fucking go, lol.
Not a big spoiler, but want to be sensitive for those that want to go in completely clean: It cribs from “Saw” and “Seven” a bit, so maybe in that way. I don’t think it’s any more a horror film than “The Dark Knight.” I thought it was pretty well paced and justified the length, mainly because I was so engrossed with it. But it does feel like it has about 9 acts.
Is it a lot of hand to hand combat or do we get most of that in the trailers? I just love watching him kick the shit out of people lol
Forgot to ask @Zilla the most important question (which he might not be able to answer yet): This might have a “fuck” in it, but do the Bat and the Cat actually fuck?
Is there any truth to Keoghan as the Joker? Feel free to DM if you don’t want it posted as a comment!
For some reason I can’t DM you, but just to keep it safe, I’ll only talk about spoilers and scenes in DMs.
