The more I think about it, he said the villain "hadn't really been done before", and that "really" is preying on my mind. Wondering if they've been done but not in the way he's doing it.
I still think Hush (which isn’t really that good, if we’re being honest) can be weaved in with the Court pretty smoothly for a movie with this tone. The same is honestly also true for Two-Face. And, also Phantasm. Lots of pieces that can be utilized in a lot of ways, all of which would work in the aftermath of the first movie. I’m just excited to see Pattinson and Stan together in this.
lol. When did you last revisit it? I used to like it a lot, but I don’t think it holds up that well today.
Am I the only one that wants Mr Freeze? I’d love to see how Reeves could ground a character like that and fit into this Gotham
Hey, we agree on something! Dunno if we have the same reasons though. For me it's that Hush is very much a redo of Knightfall Part One whose villain has an even more convoluted motive and they assassinated (not literally) a character just to make a "shocking twist". Although I do still kind of like how the end result is Riddler not being nearly as smart as he thinks he is.
The writing is definitely the main weakness, as is often the case with Jeph Loeb. Kinda just a bunch of whatever. I do also think the look of the thing is kinda of its time, and that 21st century Jim Lee isn’t as good as his X-Men work. Though, I have enough affection for Lee to find bits of it pretty cool. (For people who like that art style, Lee’s longtime colleague Marc Silvestri did a book in the past 5 yrs called Batman & Joker: Deadly Joker. And, while its plot is a bit convoluted in some ways, I personally think it rules. Real gnarly and cool.) When H2SH finally ends, I’ll be curious to give it a look. Not because I expect it to be good, but because I think it’ll be entertainingly stupid. Certainly won’t pay money for it though, lol.
The fact that Reeves has already gone out of his way to establish Joker in this universe means that they basically have to use him at some point. Not saying I think it will be in this one but I could see him being the trilogy capper
I hope they don't. I hope he remains a background presence, if only because I am sick to death of Joker.
I’ve discovered an affection for the Joker in the past couple years, after a time where I would’ve said that common refrain of “I’m tired of the Joker.” He can be a lot of fun as a chaotic storytelling device, and also as a foil for Batman. (I tend to think of Batman’s two true loves being Joker and Superman.) But also. I don’t mind the idea of a Joker existing in this world without ever becoming a main thing. Maybe Reeves and Barry will reconnect for a hypothetical third film and find a take worth leaning into outside of “bad Heath Ledger cover.” But, if they don’t, I think that’s fine. Plenty of other avenues to go down that’d fit the tone and themes of this take on Batman.
Stan did an interview where he essentially confirmed we’ll be getting Two-Face rather than just Dent in this one.
