The Band was a Canadian-American rock band formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 1967. It consisted of Canadians Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson, and American Levon Helm. — — — — I've been on an absolute tear of The Band's deeper cuts since Robbie died in August and just saw that they didn't have a thread. Quite simply one of the best groups to ever do it.
checked out their first two today and theyre really great stuff, particularly music from big pink. can definitely see how their dna is all over a lot of stuff i love, particularly wilco
These fellas are once again leading my most listened to artist count this year; would be the fourth year in a row. Just something so beautifully timeless about everything they did. Back in January, right before Garth died, I went and visited Levon and Rick's graves and Big Pink. Big Pink was surreal, you could literally feel the aura and energy emanating off the house.
man i can only imagine how unreal it feels to be there. im def gonna have to make a trip to big pink one day
finally getting to northern lights southern cross and acadian driftwood is instantly a huge discog highlight. amazing amazing song
Acadian Driftwood is a top-tier The Band track. @onionbubs Not sure if it's on the version you're listening to, but definitely check out the "Alternate" version of Twilight. Maybe their most underrated song in my opinion. Three minutes of beauty.
You gotta. I had chills the entire time I was there, from driving down the secluded path to walking around out front. In my mind I gazed out, and I could just see all those iconic Elliott Landy photos everywhere I looked, ghosts of the past rendered immortal by the beautiful art they produced in its vicinity and confines. It's one of those places where you just feel the weight, endearingly, of its legend and status all around you. You can actually rent it on Vrbo or Airbnb too! You don't get access to the basement but you do get everywhere else. I'd like to do it one day but I need more people to do it with.
made the pilgrimage to Big Pink in April while staying in Woodstock for a weekend. Beautiful area but did feel like I was being watched stoping by the house lol Took a drive to Bob Dylan's old house as well very cool to look at and picture the scene around the 60/70's up there.
I love putting that one on at my corner dive bar in the dead of winter. Fits the vibe. Fun fact if you frequent a bar with an AMI Jukebox: The Band's Greatest Hits album is all 1 credit plays!
feel like rick danko gets kinda overlooked in the goat bass player discussion but he absolutely goddamn kills it on pretty much everything. saw someone put it really well where he was the type of player who "became one" with whatever instrument he was playing
whats everyones favorite album from them? big pink was really immediate for me so that was hanging on to the title at first but lowkey starting to think northern lights southern cross is the one i lean towards most
yea i need to spend more time with it but street fright rules too, closing trio of songs on that are fantastic
Van Morrison coming in on 5% Pantomime and going WHOOAAAAA RICHARDDD!!!! makes me laugh every time. Just incredible.
I think it has to be self-titled/The Brown Album. No skips, and it just covers so many moods from the rocking upbeat stuff (Cripple Creek, Cleveland, Jemima) to the more somber and introspective (Rockin' Chair, When You Awake, Whispering Pines). Even the songs that hardly get talked about, Jawbone has 737k streams on Spotify with the next lowest song at 1.7 million, absolutely rule. My own little blurb about it:
