I agree. It’s really well-sequenced and was all-around much better. I have it burned on a CD somewhere...
Jumped into this a few weeks ago. Use to be a huge Ataris fan but somehow missed this when it came out. I can see why I didn't really succeed at the time but it's kinda cool they tried something different. I liked the newer All Soul's Day and Graveyard of The Atlantic songs. Much more a return to form. Hopefully we get some new tunes here or there in that vein.
i've been shuffling tunes around to find a sequence that flows a bit diff, but this miiiiiiiight be my favorite Ataris record??? wtf never thought that'd happen
Update. I do not have the leaked version of Welcome The Night afterall. I do have the 2 disc version of the album on CD though. Not sure what’s on the second disc. It’s been yeeeears since I’ve busted that out.
I also just found a couple burned CDs I got from Kris a few years ago when he was on solo acoustic tours. They’re basically just mixes of random acoustic covers he recorded and some other random Ataris tracks. Kinda cool. I forgot about these!
I purchased Welcome The Night and Cities by Anberlin on CD at the same time around when they came out on my way to a family vacation and I played both of those albums to death. Idk why people disliked Welcome The Night so much.
Probably because it was such a drastic change in style and tone from SLA. Big jump from “In This Diary” to “Secret Handshakes”. I think it’s an excellent album that got maligned due to the issues with Columbia and the hastily slapped-on songs at the end. I listened to the original leaked album today and it flows so much better.
To this day, I'm still baffled by how Kris plays guitar. "Kris Roe plays guitar left-handed and is known for playing an upside-down, right-handed guitar. Many wrongly believe is similar to a style made famous by Jimi Hendrix, however Hendrix actually strung the guitar to be correct for a left-handed guitarist, whereas Roe leaves the strings upside down."
I feel like he also occasionally plays the guitar right-side up too which makes it even more baffling haha
He also tunes the two high strings to the key of each song because there's no way to mute them or avoid strumming them with the way he plays. It sometimes makes precisely matching his chords impossible for anyone who plays guitar in the normal way.
Damn. So he does. Always wondered why I couldn't quite match his guitar style when playing along to the records.
Saw Kris play an acoustic show couple of nights ago, said they are still working on a new album have 50 or so songs partly recorded but most are lacking vocals.
YESSSS!!!! I looove when he posts old stuff! Can't wait to toss him a few bucks for some of that stuff!
Listening to those 4-track demos was fun. Didn't know Losing Streak was written before Anywhere But Here.
I’m excited to check out those demos. Also really cool that this covers EP is up. It’s actually one of my favorite things Kris has done, and it was my introduction to all of the bands he covered.
