Oh my word, I forgot all about that! He sent me a tape Ive long since lost to time. It was always great to see him championing for his son.
Acoustic version is cool. Don’t need a full band re-recording though I like the artwork for the 7” a lot
First impressions: "Car Song" sounds so good. Warm is a good description. Little analog fuzz but definitely full. Lyrics seem the same as the demo from first listen, but haven't checked to be sure. Love this very much. The Ataris with a little americana tinge; I'm so happy. This will be overplayed by me before we get the album. New "In This Diary" is also good. Not just a straight up re-do with a little different intro, less (maybe zero) synth. Kris's vocals definitely more mature. Similar production as "Car Song" - feels open and breathy. Totally fine with this existing in this context knowing why he re-recorded it here. Acoustic version is available now and is a great addition to the catalog.
Just curious, what’s the reasoning for the re-recording? Any idea if it (or the acoustic version) will be on the new record? The art is great. Wouldn’t have been opposed to that being the actual album cover.
The inclusion of "In This Diary" was quite deliberate because it was one of William Charles Roe's favorite The Ataris songs and it was the first time he saw the band and his son on TV. Each side of the 7-inch record includes a custom matrix engraving selected by Kristopher Roe.
Tempted to order the 7 inch but may just wait for the full album if it’s actually/finally going to happen. It’s weird, there are bands in this genre that had 1 to 2 albums that I liked that I just grew out of over time. The Ataris were not one of them. Limited discography, but the songs are very strong and have stood the test of time. I don’t think I realized how hyped I was for new stuff until now. Also, get So Long Astoria Back on wax!
I've never been a big fan of In This Diary overall, but wow, this acoustic version is incredible. The maturity of Kris's voice, the sadness and longing in his delivery and the arrangement. Damn, it's a great version.
