It was. Way more cohesive, and didn’t have the three new songs they tacked on later. Release “Welcome the Night” by The Ataris - MusicBrainz I still have it on a burned CD.
Awhile back Kris put the WTN b-sides on Bandcamp and I picked them up. I need to try Frankenstein-ing together the original tracklist.
Man, that brings back memories. The alternate artwork and everything. Such an interesting chapter for the band. I adore WTN and the b-sides from those sessions too. Gonna jam it.
Seeing them live during this era was amazing too. I love how they reworked the old songs, and even just how they added a lot of cool guitar effects to them.
Might just be me but their run of peak albums feels a bit forgotten about to me at this point, or at least feels like it should be talked about more alongside some of the other big present day nostalgia bands of that time. There are songs on legit every album that are best of era level stuff.
Top 3 of the big 3! BLUE SKIES: 1*15*96 San Dimas Broken Promise Ring END IS FOREVER: Giving Up on Love Summer Wind Bad Case of Broken Heart SO LONG ASTORIA: So Long Astoria In This Diary Takeoffs and Landings
Add a 4th to each album or top 3 from Silver Turns To Rust and I'll make an Atari's 12 track greatest hits LP playlist lol.
4th tracks: BLUE SKIES: Your Boyfriend Sucks END IS FOREVER: Fast Times at Dropout High SO LONG ASTORIA: Looking Back on Today
BLUE SKIES San Dimas Your Boyfriend Sucks Broken Promise Ring END IS FOREVER Summer Wind IOU Up Up Down Down SO LONG ASTORIA So Long Astoria The Hero Dies All You Can Ever Learn WELCOME THE NIGHT (BONUS) Connections Whatever Lies Will Help You Rest From the Last, Last Call. I think there is a good EP within welcome the night, but too much slow filler.
He just has to finish the lyrics and vocals, so we're on track for the 20th anniversary of Graveyard of the Atlantic's initial release date.
kinda weird to shoot for another one of those classic rock covers, but whatever. just put a new album in our hands finally.
this is not what I want but by golly if it somehow works in Kris's favor and gets him enough momentum to just make more music more consistently, then I guess I'm here for it
can you imagine if the only Ataris songs that get played on the radio are "boys of summer" and "summer of 69"? haha ugh. it would have been cooler to put out a 7" with a new recording of "boys of summer" on the A side and "summer of 69" on the B side.
it does sound great. but it just kinda feels like a "lets try and catch lightning in a bottle again." i'll take anything though from these guys since they're one of my fav bands.
