The All-American Rejects talked with Variety:

The Rejects decided to leave Interscope on their own terms. “We weren’t dropped,” notes Ritter. “We negotiated our way out of that building because it didn’t feel like it was a home for us anymore. They had Imagine Dragons records.” The band continued to tour relentlessly, and the burnout set in. “We did a couple of tours in that break and they just didn’t feel right at all,” says Gaylor. “By the end of them, we were like, I don’t want to do this. Packing on the bus to go home like…” He widens his eyes as if stunned, staring into the abyss.

Every recent interview clip or performance I’ve seen from this band, they’ve seemed pretty miserable or disinterested. Maybe just the lead singer. I can’t stand a frontman that feigns enthusiasm or rolls his eyes during songs he’s tired of singing. Maybe don’t do it if you don’t want to perform the songs that got you there in the first place.

Edit: this article only solidified my position; if you haven’t found identity outside of the music you feel you were pressured to make, move along.

The end of the article was positive. I think it focused a lot on how burned out they were and if you read the entire thing it definitely sounds like they changed up how they write songs and reconnected as a band. I see what you mean about how they come off but it seems like they may have turned a corner, at least internally as a band.

I saw them play a free show in my hometown a couple summers ago and they were nothing short of incredible. I was pleasantly surprised since I hadn’t seen them in about twenty years. They were tight, fun, and seemed like they wanted to be there. After the show, our local paper posted an aerial view of the crowd and said that they drew over 13,000 people on a Thursday! I don’t follow their interviews, but they put on one hell of a free show. That’s for sure
