im sure itll come out in a couple of weeks or something. i think this is the best reason i've seen to push an album back.
Turns out this wasn't the final tracklist. Tracklist is: 1. Daydream 2. New Emotion 3. My Phone Is Trying To Kill Me 4. Kelly 5. Can You Do 6. All Mean Nothing 7. 801 8. I Can Break Your Heart Too 9. Lost Angeles 10. Not Enough 11. Cruel 12. Thought Of You 13. Going Home 14. Zillionaire
This is definitely a band coming into their own and maturing - a lot of interesting things in here compared to the debut. Definite growth. Having said that, it’s not the sound from them I prefer. Right now songs like Daydream, Lost Angeles, and Cruel are in the “what I want” wheelhouse and a large subsection of the rest are not. This is only one listen, though.
The second half is much stronger IMO - Thought and Going Home are great. The latter, especially. Love me some breathyyyy songs.
"Daydream" and "Going Home" are the only tracks I care for on this; the rest are just blah. Also wished they relied more on real drum sounds and less on the electronic drums
Glad I wasn't really the only one. I do have a few more on here that I enjoy though - at least an EPs worth.
Definitely a step down from the first album, which was instantly great. But it's got a couple bops, as the kewl kids say.
Their debut was a stunner and arguably in my top three of 2018, but after a couple of listens yesterday, I don’t think this is the band firing on all cylinders. I listened back to their debut and the melodies and hooks are considerably stronger. The way it kicks off with the energetic, “Volcanic Love” for instance, nothing on this new record begins to reach those heights. “Lovin’ Is Bible”, “Stay”, “Last One” - these are all tracks that are quintessential Aces. Interesting guitar tones and energetic pop anthems with rollicking choruses. It was such a fun record. In saying all of that however, I fully expect Under My Influence to be a slow burn, a grower, and one I learn to love in time. “Daydream” is wonderful, Cruel” is an absolute gem and easily the finest track on the record, “Going Home” is gorgeous, but the hits are too infrequent and I can’t help but feel a little underwhelmed by the majority of the album.
This rules The groove on 801 Ken killed that shit Damn in fact they're laying it down every song This is a Ken album
