Also came here to disagree but Maddy beat me to it. To each their own but that's far from one of the best pop punk choruses of all time.
I standby the belief that Butch Walker’s production was a huge part of what made Santi so damn good. I wish he’d do even more in this genre. I’m also naturally a big fan of his work on Save Rock And Roll and Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!
Craig David did it better in Seven Days. Monday Took her for a drink on Tuesday We were making love by Wednesday And on Thursday and Friday and Saturday We chilled on Sunday
That album is, in many ways, one of the more long lost Butch albums with how much his fingerprints are ALL over the songwriting. His stamp is always apparent on his albums but that one feels specifically like it could fit in his catalog.
Man, this single is kind of meta. Big time serotonin dump as I was listening yesterday. It evokes some real memories of that early 00’s era without pandering to the sound. I think it’s the dream pop airy vibes. I haven’t tapped into remembering that time of my life in a while. Very unexpected jaunt down memory lane. Kind of wild to me that The Starting line put out the record they did last year and this one is happening now. IMO there’s a movement from the WWWY nostalgia overload to bands being pretty vulnerable putting out new music with a point of view. Pleasantly surprised at how much it’s resonating. EVEN the TRL line. That was such an important ritual growing up. Seeing blink debut Feeling This on the roof, watching Dance Dance premiere.
I still wonder what 1969 could've become as a project if it continued and became more of a partnership between Butch and Michael Guy Chislett, but Maya definitely shares some Santi DNA because of the 2 of them.
@Craig Manning does your feelings on it still match this: https://chorus.fm/reviews/1969-maya/ I've always had a similar lukewarm feeling on that album; I basically never reach for it. A follow-up would have been interesting.
I've always wished 40 Steps would have made the cut for inclusion on Santi. One of my favorite TAI songs.
That pretty much matches my feelings on it also. When it hits, it's excellent, but there's also a good amount of misses and would've made an excellent EP.
I should re-read this. But yeah, I think it basically has 4-5 amazing songs and is otherwise not something I’m terribly enthusiastic. “Save a Place,” though, that’s a beaut.
I love "Wreck Me," but the "Laid" cover has to be my favorite thing on that album. Gets me going every time.
I already was so into the Matt Nathanson cover of "Laid" by the time that album came out that I don't think I ever gave it a fair shot.
I love the Nathanson version too, but the 1969 cover rocks absurdly hard. One of my favorite Butch vocal performances.
I didn’t know About a Girl was their biggest single by a lot. Need to revisit fast times. It’s been a very long time.
Fast times has some really good songs, but it’s probably at the bottom for me. Been really fun playing back through their albums. It’s so wild to me that these FBR bands were literally 14-16 when they wrote their debut albums.
