I must be in the minority that I have watched The King's Speech multiple times When The Crown was going on I would watch it before every season.
It's also fun to look at noms from years ago and wonder about the movies that just completely got lost to history. Paltrow beat Blanchett for a movie called Elizabeth, which I have only seen the cover of on letterboxd. Were people buzzing about Elizabeth in 1998?
I'm looking through LB at the "least popular" (a bad metric they should do it by view count instead) modern BP noms. John Boorman's Hope and Glory seems to be the most recent most forgotten nom.
Actually I'm wrong. For the 80s it's a movie called The Dresser directed by Bullit and Friends of Eddie Coyle's Peter Yates. For the 90s it's Prince of Tides, which definitely does not seem accurate but whatever.
Some of the LB viewership stuff is surprising to me. I was watching Lone Star the other night and was surprised to see it was Sayles’ most popular on the app, meanwhile Eight Men Out - a movie I heard about like a decade earlier - was his third
I feel like I remember reading not only is it watches, but comments and additions to lists and adding to watchlists? So if a movie becomes a talking point on twitter or from a podcast or something it will jump suddenly in popularity over a film that is technically more "popular"
I thought for sure PTA had gotten his flowers before from the academy but I was wrong. Could this be the year. I feel like Dune: Messiah will win things next year as kind of culmination of the Dune trilogy ala LOTR:ROTK.
There’s always movies no one knew about at the time of the previous award ceremony. Anora and the brutalist with the most recent ceremony weren’t movies I remember hearing anything about while Oppenheimer was collecting everything. Same with most of the non-OBAA and sinners movies this year.
He got nominated for an Golden Globe, I mean I knew he wasn't gonna win because of the competition of the other nominees but I think this has opened doors for him to do more interesting work, he's gonna be working with Benny Saftie again, then Martin Scorsese, Darren Aronofsky and he's talking with Bennett Miller about a future project as well.
