You could argue “CODA” was a weak BP winner, but also COVID broke us so bad that I think a light movie about family kind of made sense in 2021, kind of like “Slumdog” winning at the start of the Obama era.

CODA is not a particularly good movie but I would gladly watch that over Crash or Green Book or A Beautiful Mind or American Beauty or The King's Speech.

I enjoy films about films, art about art, expression about expression. Nothing wrong with that kind of thing IMO.

I would say Sentimental Value is about a family, but it’s also about a family of artists. And it’s a great film. Just not as good as the others nominated.

The two things I remember the most about Sentimental Value is the grandfather giving those DVD's as a present and some poster here posting about the American actors' buttocks being a distraction and then they don't really do anything in the actual movie.

Also was surprised how many people couldn't relate to Sentimental Value, the concept of having a flawless relationship with your family is foreign to me

I didn’t really see what was so noteworthy about it compared to any other movie about having a shitty relationship with your dad.

I also don’t at all understand why Elle Fanning got a nomination. Like I have no complaints about her performance but nothing about it stood out to me at all. So like the movie in general, just didn’t hit me emotionally or impress me much in any other way.

I did love Worst Person in the World and would strongly rec to anyone who hasn’t watched it regardless of your feelings about SV

So is Tarantino the big name that hasn't won since now Nolan and Anderson won? Can't imagine him winning with the Dano stuff and the renewed attention to the racial language in his films.

  12. Sure but he could be a painter or a photographer or a baseball player and the movie doesn’t change. It’s a familial drama. The profession is just a plot mechanic. It isn’t what the movie is about.

  13. If the Fincher sequel to once upon a time in Hollywood hits at all I could see a screenplay win

  15. Depends on the movie. Not if it’s another hateful eight lol. But he also seems to be limiting what work he could be doing right now because his stupid self imposed ten movies rule

Him being a director is what kicks most of the plot into action. It deals with the uneasiness ane moral grey area of using your shared experiences to make stories without the consent of others.

If mechanics had an awards show they would probably like a movie about mechanics. Half of my co-workers love Abbott Elementary.

I fell off a forklift when I was 18. I always had to be the one to go up on it because I always refused to take the test.
