Obviously absurd there hasn’t been a previous woman winner in cinematography but that feels like an even more male dominated field than most others in film. I can’t think of a single other nominee off the top of my head.
The winners have been a lot better since they put Weinstein in jail but Sentimental Value winning best foreign film is just another example of movies about movies being a cheat code to victory.
Yeah this is the third time a woman has been nominated in that category. First was Rachel Morrison in 2017 for Mudbound and the second was Mandy Walker for Elvis (???) in 2022
for me: OBAA Secret Agent Bugonia - Sinners Marty Hamnet Train Dreams - Sentimental Value Frankenstein F1 Sorry Baby, No Other Choice, and Blue Moon all probably top 5 with OBAA and Secret Agent as number 1 and number 2. Need to watch Accident and Resurrection still. Good year for movies, best of the decade maybe?
The old man is a director and the American girl is the star in his movie after his daughter says no. It can be about other things as well and also be about a filmmaker. It is an old stereotype that movies about movies tend to do better. They like to see themselves as struggling artists.
Good wins overall, wish The Secret Agent or It Was Just An Accident took International Feature but loved Sentimental Value so was still happy! Amy Madigan win was the highlight for my family, she grew up in the same neighborhood as my dad/his family, went to the same elementary school as my dad/his siblings and was my uncle’s first ever kiss lol so my dad was going crazy when she won
I have no idea where it ranks all time but One Battle After Another is definitely one of the better movies to ever win. I wonder if the embarrassment of Green Book winning really woke them up.
