We were just discussing over dinner the years 1991-1998 or so, for the Oscars and we felt like the movies in that decade (or close enough) were just so good . We would have seen everything at that time frame, that was nominated for the big categorries, and here we are today, barely seeing anything. Sure, our tastes have changed, but the movies seem to have changed as well.
I liked Nomadland and The Rider but Zhao's recent career makes me think I was wrong. Every director gets one franchise mulligan so I didn't hold the superhero movie against her.
See, that decade to me, and maybe its just my age, but that decade was jsut great for movies.... And now, maybe because I dont go to the theater to watch them as much now, and its just 'streamed' and maybe thats part of the problem? That there is just an overabundance of movies now? And its watered down? I just dont see how the movies now, or recently , compare to those. Edied - I just googled 'Best pictures 2010-2025' and there are some really good ones on that list. So maybe Im mistaken. Maybe like I Said, there are just so many movies out there now, its watered down./
There were a lot less movies released theatrically in the 90's. It went from 236 movies in 1990 to 993 in 2018. It is actually smaller now post-COVID but still a lot less than it was.
