I don't know what they have done previous years, but I wouldn't have thought Slant would participate in something so beneath them.
This ballet you filled out has at least one error on it. Cinematography is wrong. Sentimental value should be train dreams.
I've seen 37 of the BP winners. Bottom for me would be Green Book, Crash, The Artist, EEAAO and Birdman. I don't remember American Beauty enough to say whether I would still like it or not. Forrest Gump is a deeply evil movie blah blah blah but it's still a movie movie baby.
I really liked American Beauty back in the day. Sure, a lot of it is gross but I mean, intentionally so. And the plastic bag thing became a punchline, but it still worked for me. I haven’t seen it in a while so I don’t know how I’d feel about it now.
Is Slumdog Millionaire really that bad? Can’t say I ever think about it or that I’ve seen it in years but I don’t remember it being as offensively bad as Crash or Green Book
2008 overall was a pretty bad year for movies. Synecdoche was the best film that year but it was not that well received back then.
2008 bad oscars but lot of great commercial films that year. Also Danny Boyle's too good of a filmmaker for Slumdog to possibly be put in the same category as movies like Crash or Green Book
I think movies like Slumdog, Green Book, CODA, Argo and The Kings Speech won because they're generally crowd-pleasers for mainstream audiences. Even with all their flaws, audiences got a sense of enjoyment watching these characters fight the odds to win in the end. I'm not suggesting it's what makes these particular films great (I think Argo is the only one of those five I've seen a 2nd time). But at the time of their release right before Academy voting is what sticks out in their minds.
It is more egregious when there is a much better film that can fit that slot. The King's Speech winning over The Social Network, for example. Sometimes Chili's or Chipotle hits the spot but if you call it the best restaurant people are going to side eye you.
I agree... as the 2010s were coming to a close and all the film writers were compiling their best of the decade list, The Social Network was the one I would have put on top of my list.
CODA isn't really that bad but it sticks out like a sore thumb in the recent run of films that have won.
Genuinely really didn't like CODA but in what was probably the worst year for Best Picture I kind of get why it eventually won
2020 was the worst year. I remember it being even more painful since 2019 was probably the best overall list of nominees this century.
The only BP nominee from 2021 I really liked was Licorice Pizza and that's still like PTA's 6th best movie. Dune and Drive My Car aren't really for me, but I get why they have their fans though I LOVE Dune 2. 2020 had Sound of Metal, Minari, Judas & the Black Messiah, The Father, and Nomadland.
