I’m being a bit facetious saying that. But Aster doesn’t seem to be interested in courting the awards crowd. I feel like he’d have to pull a Fincher and make something conventional to get in with them and I don’t think he wants to do that.
Tbc I know Eddington is very niche and out there. Just that with Frankenstein and F1 hell even Bugonia getting in there for BP. There’s definitely a world where a modern western that doubles as a black comedy while nimbly tackling the current climate AND a pandemic should be slotted in.
Also Eddington was a bomb and Poor Things was a hit. If Aster has a film that does good business it helps get academy members interested
like I said before 80% of that academy hasn't seen Eddington, and there's a non zero chance that they all just have a crush on Emma Stone because who doesn't
yeah kinda but Poor Thing cleaned up and with Subtance and Bungonia getting noms it feels like the subject matter of Eddington isnt why its getting snubbed
Idk about subject matter. I’d say major theme or message. This is a dead country, rotten from the inside out, and there is no hope for salvation.
2nd time through I can post and watch. This one is also the HBO stream to my new tv. I gave my first watch a bit of a break since it was a Plex rip
Its not as cutting but that is also Bugonia. Why pretend like oscar noms are decided by the content and merit of the film and not by schmoozing campaigns. Would be weird to make Eddington with its message as you describe and then schmooze it up.
Because Eddington was also dismissed by a large portion of the audience because of how acidic it was? Chicken or an egg type situation, a person with that view of the world is probably not interested in schmoozing, and the people being schmoozed are definitely not going to be able to handle the message of such a film Can’t speak on Bugonia bc I haven’t seen it yet but I can’t imagine it is as targeted or feel bad as Eddington. Maybe!
