It is so bizarre that there are another two months until the actual ceremony. We aren't using horses and buggies anymore. They get digital screeners.
F1 is such a bad BP nom. As others have said, it’s not Emilia Perez embarrassing, but it’s baffling for sure. And I think Michael B. Jordan could pull at upset. He’s incredible in both roles. Timmy’s gonna get other chances.
Emilia Perez is a better nominee because it united almost everyone in hate and mockery. F1 would never elicit the emotions the same way.
This is true. Since they expanded the nominees, they seemingly always have one blockbuster that has no chance of winning. It should have been “Weapons”!
Crazy Rich Asians felt like such a monumental cultural shift, and Chu wasn't even nominated for that one, or Wicked for that matter! (bc yeah CRA wasn't like the best movie, it was just important to me personally) KPDH feels like this year's EEAAO for me, but ofc it's only up for animated feature and song. welp, here's hoping Sinners sweeps everything else.
The new casting award is interesting because it highlights very different approaches to casting. Marty Supreme has two famous leads at the top but so much of that film and other Safdie movies is finding these unknown actors or people not known for acting and seeing something in them. That is a lot harder than casting from a list of well-known names.
I am fully aware of the divide of popular movies versus the arthouse but I am only really beginning to learn the difference between games that are critically acclaimed and what people actually play. My students seem to just play sports games and Fortnite and a few other shooters.
The entire cast of Sentimental Value being nominated in the acting awards but the movie not receiving a Best Casting nomination is a good bit.
The fact that Stavros Halkias is going to be at the Academy Awards is even more surreal than Sean Baker getting a win.
If Bugonia was a serious contender for winning Best Picture there would be two months of re-litigating old Cum Town bits.
Stav’s podcast ep with Josh Safdie was very fun. Him telling Josh how he just loads his cast up with a bunch of people with the most fucked-up faces made me laugh out loud.
the best thing to happen to the Oscars in recent years is the shift toward recognizing more international films. America takes up so much space -- in every single facet of the world. it's refreshing to finally see other cultures represented even if it's still not enough
Not to drag something out that isn’t the point but didn’t Taylor swift release a whole documentary about how she changed the direction of her music after Reputation got largely blanked at the Grammys? also if you think category fraud is bad at the Oscar’s hoo boy
I think there was just a scene in an otherwise unrelated documentary where she said she just needs to make a better album.
