this year feels like a regression to the mean after last year's wealth of surprise nominations for great stuff like Lady Bird, Get Out, Phantom Thread, Call Me By Your Name, etc. academy gotta overcorrect I suppose
It clearly has a ton of other support around the Academy, though, and Cuaron is also the favorite for Best Director, which many still link to Best Picture. So I’m not counting it out yet.
Only one of the eight nominated films is fronted mainly by a white male lead. That’s pretty good in terms of representation at least.
No Crazy Rich Asians, but Isle of Dogs gets nominated. I see you. At least Bao and Black Panther are getting recognition.
cool that Spike Lee finally got nominated laughable and emblematic of the academy as a whole that it took 33 years since his debut for it to happen
I still need to see The Favourite and Bohemian Rhapsody, but A Star is Born is the only one of the eight films I actively enjoyed.
I really hope Infinity War or Christopher Robin gets Visual Effects. The latter seemed to be really overlooked by many, but I thought it was a great movie.
No Eighth Grade and no Hereditary. I had much higher hopes for Bo getting some kind of recognition. There are definitely a few categories that could have easily put them in.
