Last year way more of my favorites got recognized so I had a lot of interest in most categories. This year there are only a few films nominated that I really want to pull for. I wish I could go in and swap all the BoRhap and Green Book noms for others, then I might be on the edge of my seat.
My only real interest this year is in making sure that neither Green Book nor Bohemian Rhapsody wins Best Picture. And neither will, thankfully. Sucks they'll both be winning acting awards, though.
A Star is Born is the only movie i’ve really loved this year that’s nominated for a bunch of stuff. It’d be great to see a foreign film win best picture though.
Just submitted my ballot for my office Oscar pool. Had a really tough time separating what I personally loved and what I know is gonna win.
Some of the categories that are either very open or are 50/50 races between two films are: Documentary Feature, Live Action Short, Documentary Short, Sound Editing, Original Score, Production Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, Costume Design, and Film Editing.
The oddsmakers have RBG leading with the edge over Free Solo in second place, so I have a feeling it will be one of those two.
Yep to all of the categories Anthony mentioned. I would love to see Minding the Gap win Best Doc, but I have a feeling it's going to Free Solo. Also all of the Documentary Shorts were amazing, so that one was really tough to gauge.
I would be so hype if Free Solo won. Been following Alex’s career for like 9 years, he’s so inspiring for me.
It is absolutely wild that Bohemian Rhapsody is going to win Best Film Editing. Like after that infamous clip was making the rounds it's like the Academy has to be in on the meme to actually do it.
Free Solo is an interesting conundrum because I feel like 90% of the Academy voters are seeing it at home via screener, rather than on a big screen, so I wonder how much of the impact of it is lost in that setting.
I doubt even half of the Academy voters have twitter accounts so I doubt they’re seeing that BR clip go around. I don’t think many voters will be affected much by online discourse in voting.
I think people are exaggerating how bad the editing is in that scene just because it’s from BR. Sure, it’s kind of off but people are acting like it’s the worst editing a film has ever had or been nominated for. The movie had really great editing the majority of the time other than those 10 seconds in a 2 hour film. Best film editing should go to Vice, though.
This is like those amazing one star amazon movie reviews except these actually matter and make me sad.
I saw an article years ago about an old white movie producer/Academy voter who voted for 12 Years A Slave without seeing it and his vote was out of white guilt.
I've finally watched every bp nom now, so I'm ready. Couple other movies from other categories I wanted get to but probably won't before Sun. Personal ranking: Roma . Blackkklansman The Favourite Black Panther A Star Is Born . . Vice Green Book . . . Bohemian Rhapsody
What would you replace them with? I haven’t seen many good films over the last year so would love some recs I still need to see I think 3 of the best picture nominees but the ones I have seen I haven’t loved. I did really really like The Favourite so pulling for that but feels like a weaker crop of films this year to me
