Let’s be honest and admit a handful to most of the films don’t deserve to be nominated depending on the year. It’s based on who the people in Hollywood want to see with politics mixed in.
I don't want Bohemian Rhapsody to win anything because then I have to eat crow with my girlfriend who is convinced it's going to sweep when I thought the movie was barely passable as a fun time. We regularly argue about it lol.
I got second place in a Guess the Oscars contest last year, and I just submitted my picks in the categories for this year (what I think will win): Picture: Roma Actor: Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody Actress: Glenn Close, The Wife Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali, Green Book Supporting Actress: Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk Director: Alfonso Cuaron, Roma Animated Feature: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Original Screenplay: Green Book Cinematography: Roma Documentary Feature: RBG Documentary Short Subject: Lifeboat Foreign Language Film: Roma Original Score: Black Panther Costume Design: The Favourite
glad to find out The Favourite is playing at a local theater so i get to catch it tomorrow on $5 Tuesday! hate that this theater in particular always get good indie films, the people are always loud and annoying, the seats suck, it's always dirty and occasionally smells. the theater in the neighboring town is MUCH nicer but never shows those more interesting smaller movies.
That wasn't one of the categories they made us guess for whatever reason, but I'd have picked Blackkklansman or Beale Street. Probably the former.
I won last years chorus Oscar pool (Are we doing that this year too? and am I eligible to win again, ha) but I still need to collect my thoughts on a couple things, but I’ve seen pretty much a majority of the films.
after watching Minding the Gap I have found some kind of acceptance that Won't You Be My Neighbor was snubbed. Still super mad about that, but Minding the Gap was excellent and has my vote
Part of my reasoning for picking Green Book to win is because if literally anything else wins I can still be happy haha
First Man is back in theaters here, might see that next. Also Free Solo, which my bro (who's into rock climbing) recommended. Roma is on Netflix and I have Eighth Grade on DVD, I don't know why I keep putting those off. Haven't been in the mood for them, I guess.
oooo I should see if First Man is showing in any imax theatres near me. ‘Apollo 11’ Trailer: The Moon Landing Documentary Critics Call ‘Astonishing’ also this isn't the academy but I didn't see a Sundance thread and this seemed relevant. Can't wait to see this!
Couldn't sit through First Man, too much shaky cam. I don't remember the last time I left in the middle of a movie but I was worried of getting sick. I'd like to give the movie another shot, though, maybe on a much smaller screen.
Huh, I was fine during Interstellar, but I watched that at home. I don't think I had an issue with Gravity, either, but, again, I watched that at home. Also, First Man is weird because it's not like Cloverfield or something where the guy's running with the camera, instead it's just quick successions of close-up shots of shaking in place. ...in space. edit: I don't really understand why something does or doesn't give me motion sickness. You would think the hallway scene in Inception would be dizzying, but the camera isn't moving around--everything else is.
yeah the director chose to film in a way that would feel like documentary style without it being a documentary. that along with putting the audience in the driver's seat of neil's journey at times. I absolutely adore this film, it's a bummer you felt this way, though you aren't the first person I've read comment that. hopefully on a smaller screen it doesn't bother you as much.
Yeah, the choice really makes sense within the context of the film. I was really into the story, too, so I was a bit bummed when I walked out. I'll try again some other time.
