I doubt Bohemian Rhapsody wins anything other than maybe a sound award, with voters using the classic rationalization that the people who worked on the film behind the scenes shouldn't be punished for Singer's sins. But even there, I have a feeling for now that the tech categories will be where the Academy will want to throw some wins in Black Panther's direction, so it very well could go home empty-handed.

In cases like this, would it be out of the question for the Academy to just replace a nominee that’s already been announced? Not like they’d do that, but if this became a big enough deal you think you’d have some protests from people in Hollywood.

They've given Roman Polanski an academy award so I'm gonna say no.

honest question, should a movie be shamed or crushed because of one person being a terrible person? like should all the actors and crew and everyone be punished for that? (this is hypothetical because I also don't think BR belongs in the best picture category). or is best picture just so closely tied to the director that just not including him in best director category is enough.

this is just something I go back and forth on

I don't think there would be a big enough push to have something like that happen. Most people in the industry are probably firmly in the "well he was fired so it's fine now" camp, and another large group of people probably figure it won't win anything anyway. Ironic from the industry that has been so eager to wear "Time's Up" and "Me Too" pins over the last year, I know.

Yes, the entire movie should be tied to who he is. These are not new or shocking allegations. He should not have been given the job and no one should be supporting this film or any others that he still is allowed to make.

I mean it’s clear that no one really cares at all about how many people he’s hurt and everyone wants to throw money and awards at him, so it’s all pretty much moot.

The fact that Singer hasn't been fired from Red Sonja yet is just so typical of how these kinds of things are still handled, even in a "post-Me Too" world. That said, going to be a lot harder to justify keeping him on after this article. It's beyond disgusting that it takes something this detailed and extreme for there to be even a chance of anything being done about it, but here we are.

There have been articles with this much detail and extreme allegations for years and years and years. These specific stories are new but I have read almost everything in that piece word for word from many other places. The only thing different is that this is coming up around Oscars time. I don’t think anything will happen to him at all this time, just like it hasn’t ever before. Unless we get something like an Anthony Rapp speaking to Buzzfeed kind of account, this will just be ignored again. He is the worst and nothing sticks to him.

It’s already made a ton of money, so I don’t think anyone would feel too terrible about it. It winning Best Picture means the producers get the Oscar, meaning the people that knew about Singer’s horrible past get an award for funding a movie directed by a pedophile. At this point, that should be unthinkable, but it could likely happen.

Not going to lie, the only part of any of this I had heard of before now was the Egan story, and even that story was covered so briefly because of how it turned out that it seemed like barely a blip in the news cycle. And I'm someone who actually follows industry news a fair amount. I can't imagine that the majority of other people even heard that much, let alone any more. This article is so different because it paints such an exhaustive picture of everything, on a clear timeline, with not just victim testimony but rock-solid sourcing and meticulous attention to detail (every single time they presented a victim's account, they immediately followed it up with a sentence or two stating that, yes, they were able to independently corroborate everything that was said). I think this one has a better chance then anything that's come before, is all I'm saying. Not saying it's definitely going to make anything change.

Much like Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody will not win Best Picture.

yeah that makes sense. that's what i was trying to think about. like i don't think if the actors or set designers and stuff should necessarily be shut out if they've done an award winning job, but director and best picture makes sense.

and to be clear, even though i would hope it wouldn't have to be made clear, i in no way support or hope that he would be awarded, he's a terrible human being, was just posing a question about the big picture in how this affects or should/should not effect the other people who worked super hard to make a movie that aren't evil people.

Just watched Roma tonight. Took me a while to get invested but the last hour I was hooked in. I still need to see A Star is Born, Green Book, Vice and Blackkklansman.

Also I just saw Minding the Gap was added to Hulu. I'll probably watch that tomorrow.

I've started to see some speculation that they might give Actor to Cooper as a kind of consolation for not getting a director nom. I'd actually be pretty happy with that
