I’m thinking more along the lines of all the old films I’ve always loved that, in retrospect, are super reactionary and clearly send the wrong message
Imagine watching a movie where the villain says "I learned these tactics from my oppressors" and thinking "hey he's being a bit hypocritical"
This whole thing just proved my point, that there's a fundamental ideological divide here and no amount of "discussion" can satisfyingly change the person's mind.
If that’s the case then I’m interested in why you feel the way you do re: my last post that quoted you
What's the point? You'd obviously think it silly that I think Crazy Rich Asians should be in running. omg so biased.
Here’s an all of awards season snub: Robert Redford. I saw The Old Man & The Gun on Sunday and he was so damn good in it
he's so effortlessly charming in that role, his performance makes that movie a joy. definitely should have been given some props as a legend still so good in his final (?) role.
...to try to understand your point of view? Isn’t the point of a forum to discuss things? If you didn’t seem genuine about it then I wouldn’t bother. I don’t understand why you’re acting so hostile about it. I’ve been saying how I feel and have tried explaining the thought process behind it. Most of what I’m getting in response is “if you don’t get it then you’re a dumbass end of story”
Glenn Close seems to be the finally it's about time award this year instead but it could have been both, thought Redford would be a shoe in not to say it's undeserved in either case they were both incredible
This is the difference. You expect me to explain a thought process while I approach pop culture almost entirely emotionally. I'm not about to tell you why I think marginalized people's feelings towards movies matters in film criticism. I don't owe you that.
Anyone else think it would be fun if the people in this thread submitted our projected winners in a collective google spreadsheet and see who gets the most correct? My friends and I did it last year and it was great. I’d be down to do it with a lot of people.
I don't "expect you" to explain anything and I don't think you "owe" me anything. Respond or don't, I don't care, but there's absolutely no reason for you to be this fucking condescending or act like typing up messages on a forum is asking the world of you, jfc. But that isn't what we're talking about. We're talking about your implicit claim that marginalized people's feelings towards movie is all that matters. That your enjoyment of a movie -- what makes you think a movie is "good" or "bad" -- seems to ultimately have nothing to do with the movie itself. How would you feel if Crazy Rich Asians (just using this since you mentioned it, not because of anything about the film, it's on my list but haven't even seen it tbh) was just an absolute pile of shit movie? It does all the things regarding representation and social commentary and whatever else you feel is important about movies and pop culture in general (I still don't really have an idea as to what exactly that is, which is the crux of what I want to know), but the story, the acting, lighting/effects, etc. is, by your standards, absolutely horrendous. From what you've conveyed, it seems like that wouldn't impact your opinion about it in the slightest -- that you would still call it "good" and think that it's deserving of all the praise -- because what you consider important to a movie being good is present and it trumps everything else. Am I wrong in interpreting your posts that way?
Can someone else take this, please? I feel like I'm being asked to legitimize my experience and perspective as a POC, so I'm checking out.
