War movies win tech awards, especially war movies with Best Picture nominations. I hoped some of that Whiplash magic would've rubbed off on Baby Driver. Speaking of upsets, Whiplash winning Best Film Editing that year was one.

This doesn't age well. Especially when there's at least three other actors that shoulda won in that movie instead.
I mean, you can't fault the movie for that though. Also he gets riddled with bullets in it, so it's a bit cathartic when you think about it that way.
I personally just don't think they did. The Academy just always loves to give the tech awards to prestige war films, whenever possible. Also, at least in the Film Editing category, Dunkirk had the added wrinkle of the multiple timeline thing, which I'm sure a bunch of voters were also taken in by.
