I thought this was one of the strongest categories of the year, all the nominees were good. Manville and Metcalf were both better than Janney, in my opinion, but none of these made me roll my eyes or anything when they were announced.
The 4 acting categories seemed set in stone since the Golden Globes. Both screenwriting categories and director I could see as possible upsets.
Yeah are there really “upsets” at the oscars? All the major awards are usually well predicted way ahead of time. I’m trying to remember the last time a major award category winner was a complete shock.
Adapted Screenplay is a lock, and Director is mostly a lock as well, I don't think there's any way CMBYN and GDT don't win them.
Was that a shock though? The way it happeend was, but i remember seeing moonlight predicted from a bunch of places
La La Land was the safe pick, and Moonlight was such an atypical film to win Best Picture that it really was an upset. Also Christoph Waltz winning for Django in 2012 was a huge upset; it was supposed to be either Tommy Lee Jones or Robert De Niro that year.
