Phantom Thread and Call Me By Yor Name are definitely worth seeing. The only best picture noms I haven’t seen are The Post and Darkest Hour. I’m sure both are fine, but I feel like I’ve already seen both before and I can’t get past the prosthetics for Oldman. They look bad. Plus, I think our society idolizes Churchill way too much.
Nightmare scenario: oldman, mcdormand, Rockwell, Janney, Three Billboards for pic, Del toro for director, Three Billboards for screenplay
I know it’s a long shot but it’s what I’m hoping for to mix things up... Actor: Chalemet or Kaluuya Actress: Sally Hawkins Supporting Actor: Richard Jenkins Supporting Actress: Janney or Metcalf Director: Del Toro Picture: Aqua Man Love Story
yeah if Billboards beats Lady Bird, Get Out, and Big Sick I'll be so mad I'll hang billboards outside their houses
I was reading some article the other day about projected winners and I honestly didn’t realize Three Billboards and Shape of Water were so beloved.
I think Get Out takes Original Screenplay, it won the Writer’s Guild award and I think that’s how they decide to give that movie a nod. I’m also growing increasingly certain that Three Billboards won’t win Best Picture. All those others are locks though, sadly.
I would truly love if there were a bunch of upsets this year. Give me DRAMA, Academy. I want a million screenshots of reactions like last year!!!
Upsets are the best. Moonlight winning last year was such an incredible moment. Christoph Waltz winning in 2012 was another great surprise win. Would be great if Get Out surprises everyone and takes Director and Picture, for example. I’d really love to see it happen.
Get Out is really the only movie that could possibly beat 3 Billboards or Shape of Water based on guild wins. God I hope it pulls off the upset.
I think we're going to see a relatively safe showing. Three Billboards has a lot locked down. The backlash surrounding it may affect the outcome of BP but I don't think that McDormand or Rockwell lose. It might get Screenplay as well. Oldman will most likely get Actor, which sucks. Not looking forward to CMBYN and Get Out getting shut out. Would be hype to see Call Me get Adapted Screenplay, but Mudbound could pull that.
Eh, I wouldn't call it disappointing. It'd be his first win and he's worked his ass off to get there. Awesome to see a genre director win anything, tbh. I still haven't seen Shape of Water, though.
CMBYN for Adapted is as much of a lock as Oldman, Rockwell, McDormand and Janney. They're not going to let James Ivory die without an Oscar, not to mention it just being the flat-out best screenplay of the nominees.
