Yeah this is more well stated than what I said. In the moment he couldn't stop and think to realize that other people would have more info than he did at that second.
I guess my issue is, if you think he should've won best director, say so because you think he was a better director, not because of a streak of non whites winning... imagine eminem wins best rap record a few years in a row or something, then chance wins, and someone said, "would've been nice to keep the streak of non black winners alive"
EVERYONE LIKES THE OSCARS AGAIN! Yay. Just a few hours ago they were the Satan awards and now they're good again.
You could see the way he quickly stepped in to control the situation and correct the "we lost by the way" guy. I really didn't see it as him playing a hero or anything. Although it would have been a really bad look if he hadn't stepped in and the La La Land people were now characterized by the one asshat dude.
The Moonlight crew made the best film of the year and I wish they could have had the pure experience of winning. Their moment had to be tainted by one of the craziest moments in television history. It's a bummer they didn't get a full platform free of distraction from all the ridiculousness
Also, I don't know what it all takes to "direct" a movie but to me it seems like La La Land had a lot more people to "direct" in a lot of its scenes and it was still a pretty solid movie so I don't think the director was undeserving of best director. But I could be a moron with a lack of knowledge on the topic haha
For real. "We lost" isn't even accurate; you just didn't win. It won several other high profile awards lol
Eff that La La Land producer who gave a speech anyways after finding out they lost. The other one handled it like a true gentleman.
Leo just wanted some payback for making him wait so long to get his Oscar. He's had this planned since last year's ceremony.
I've defended the Oscars as a showcase many times, including in film threads on this website. They get a lot of stuff wrong, and some stuff right. They're easy to make fun of, they're self important and often reward scumbags and overwhelmingly award white men, but they boost viewership for the films that win, so of course people are celebrating that Moonlight won. I think people's views on it are nuanced.
Definitely. Do producers get a physical Oscar when a director, composer, actress or anyone involved in their movie wins? If not, they should still feel pretty damn proud even without the actual hardware.
Would you still want Moonlight to win if it happened to be your second favorite movie of the year? That's what Jakob is addressing. Should an inferior film win if it helps with diversity? It's that simple. I want the best film to win. If the next 10 "best directors" happen to be white, why the fuck should that matter, so long as their movies are most deserving in an unbiased assessment?
