LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA, AULI'I CRAVALHO, STING, JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AND JOHN LEGEND TO PERFORM THIS YEAR’S NOMINATED SONGS AT THE OSCARS Auli'i Cravalho + Lin-Manuel Miranda to perform “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana Sting to perform “The Empty Chair” from Jim: The James Foley Story Justin Timberlake to “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from Trolls John Legend will perform both “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” and “City of Stars” from La La Land
Finally got around to watching Hacksaw Ridge. Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Just have Lion and Hidden Figures left to watch as far as the BP noms.
Personally, I'd like to see them split it. As much as I love La La Land (and honestly prefer it to Moonlight overall as a film), Barry's direction is just so strong. I like Damien a lot, but his direction is by no means flawless - there's some shots that are unfocused, sometimes the color isn't right, etc. With Moonlight, the direction is arguably the best part of the movie.
Moonlight definitely deserves both, and should definitely get at least Best Director, but its chances are very slim as of now.
Saw all the nominated live action shorts in a theater today. Probably the first time I'd seen ANY oscar nominated shorts, it was pretty interesting and fun. Definitely recommend it if they're doing it in a theater near you.
I'm visiting my girlfriend in Milwaukee this weekend and there's a theater showing all of the shorts. We're going to try and do both showings.
Saw all of the live action shorts last night. I think Ennemis Interieurs will win and definitely my favorite of the bunch. La Femme et le TGV was also very good. Timecode definitely the weakest of the bunch.
Timecode was weird because the dancing reminded me too much of The OA haha, which I had recently watched. Thought Silent Nights and Ennemis were the best.
I'm SO close to getting all the nominated movies (excluding doc/short/foreign) but I think The Red Turtle, My Life As a Zucchini and Nocturnal Animals will all end up escaping me before the ceremony, which sucks. However, I'm pretty pumped about having 3/5 doc noms, 4/5 doc short noms and all the animated short noms, which is better than I usually do before the show. If I had more time, I'd probably get I Am Not Your Negro, The Salesman and Toni Erdmann too.
A friend wanted to see "Not Your Negro" this week, but I didn't have time to go. Who you guys got for best actor now?
Honestly, after the SAG awards I think Denzel has a shot at the upset. The actors are the biggest branch of the Academy and they heavily overlap with SAG. The negative press around Affleck may have actually caught up with him, despite all indications otherwise. We could be looking at 3/4 acting awards going to actors of color this year (with Davis and Ali all but locked up in Supporting). Pulling for Denzel, personally.
I liked her a lot in Equals, Cafe Society, and Certain Women. She's become one of my favorite actresses recently.
Channing Tatum and Michael B. Jordan, too. But Stewart just had a year of Certain Women, Cafe Society, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, and Personal Shopper. Not to mention Clouds of Sils Maria and Adventureland and Still Alice. She's in contention for our best currently working.
I think she's due. She just needs that right role now. Something not too Assayas-arty and more universally appealing than Cafe Society. Next few years she's getting that nom
