I think "People" ---> "Give Yourself a Try" ---> "Frail State of Mind" is going to be a good playlist starter for me one of these days
Also, I think The Birthday Party is my favorite single. I love everything about this song. I also identify with the lyrics, and at least how I've interpreted them some of Matty's narrative in this song seriously gives me goosebumps every single time I hear it. The first time I heard Streaming fade into it I teared up. This band, if nothing else, just creates the most intensely beautiful ocean of sounds in every track.
Other than the first two I actually like this and I think you could then easily make a separate set based that Nothing Revealed, Tonight, and Don't Worry and you would get that "late night" R&B feel. I normally don't like rearranging songs on albums but I feel this one is an exception and I might make two separate playlists based on this format lol
If I hadn't read the description, I'd be upset that you left off my favorite track, "Frail State of Mind." But, I like that, instead of doing this in an "improve the album" kinda way (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but boring & lame to do w/in the first week, imo), you're just messing around w/ hypothetical themed playlists/remixes/whatever. I wouldn't wanna lose A Brief Inquiry for this (it's my personal clear fav album of theirs), but I do wonder about a hypothetical timeline where the 37 "Music for Cars" tracks were a trilogy of shorter annual albums instead. I remember getting jumped in here the other month for "judging an album you haven't heard" when I complained about longer albums, lol. But, while I don't dislike anything on this & like the experience of listening to the whole thing through more than a lot of people... I do see value in multiple smaller albums instead of one big drop.
just wanna say that "Frail State of Mind" into "Yeah I Know" is actually super cool. it's like the narrative leaves the narrator of FSOM at home and follows everyone else on a filthy night out
Tucked up erection line was honestly a solid metaphor, leave it to Matty for even a dick joke to require a genius annotation
yeah! the songs are notes and the album is the conditional form. I think this album is meant to be deconstructed. anyway, playlist 2 seems to work for me too so I may as well share that too. ((MUSIC FOR CARS)): 1. The End (Music For Cars) 2. Frail State of Mind 3. I Think There’s Something You Should Know 4. Yeah I Know 5. Having No Head 6. Nothing Revealed/Everything Denied 7. Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy) 8. What Should I Say 9. Shiny Collarbone 10. If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know) 11. Bagsy Not In Net 12. Don’t Worry the darker, moodier boy. I cannot stress enough: The End *perfectly* follows I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes) sonically. if I were making some crazy massive MFC playlist, I think I’d order it ABIIOR—>”Disc 2”—>”disc 1” for that reason (also feel like it would make the final stretch fly by too). I liked the idea of doing an album that basically exclusively hones in on their more electronic/experimental tendencies. I like to envision this as the night to the other playlist’s day. I like the idea of it soundtracking a night out born out of sadness and boredom where you end up meeting someone and falling head over heels for them. I’d say my one complaint with this and what I miss from this *is* the release songs like M&YTS, Roadkill, People, and the like bring, the energy and excitability was trickier to balance here, but I like it a lot overall. I toyed with this actually, I still kinda like it but I think a lot of people would complain the tracks are “too similar” or something if it was like this on the official track list
fair enough, I actually think "I Think There's Something you Should Know" is a lot more similar to "Frail State of Mind" vibe-wise but I can see why people would disagree. fully agreed about "The End" following "I Always Wanna Die" absolutely perfectly too
If you were to divide the tracks into musical styles what categories would you use? I want to go through every mfing song and categorize them for separate playlists.
Ok, I ended up making a 20 song record that'd be structured a bit more closely to the first two albums and it's absurd. I did throw in some interludes etc but this seems like it flows well. Gonna listen in a bit. The 1975 (ABIIOR) Give Yourself a Try Frail State of Mind It's Not Living (If it's Not With You) TooTimeTooTimeTooTime Streaming The Birthday Party Me & You Together Song I Think There's Something You Should Know Sincerity is Scary Love It If We Made It What Should I Say I Like America & America Likes Me Then Because She Goes Nothing Revealed/Everything Denied Having No Head If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know) Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy) I Couldn't Be More In Love I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)
So excited for the wider world to hear this album tomorrow - seeing this thread go wild again should be fun
Not counting singles, my favorite moments of the album are probably: - bridge/outro to Roadkill - bridge to I Think There’s Something - What Should I Say’s chorus ( Tell em the the things that you told me!) - Bagsy “do you want to leave at the same time?”
