Only song I'm not a huge fan of is Then Because She Goes. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, I'm just incredibly indifferent towards it, and I think it's mostly the way it's mixed.
so, just for kicks, I tried to envision this as a double album and split it up into two separate Apple Music playlists (or “discs”): ((BOOT WORLD)) and ((MUSIC FOR CARS)). I actually think it... kinda works? I don’t take it seriously or anything but this album feels fun to play around with in a way I usually would find unimaginable lol.
Real talk, one of my favorite moments on the record. I just appreciate the honesty. He's bringing up a valid criticism and he's like yeah maybe I screwed up, but life is hectic and hard. The lyrical tone on this entire album is a treat.
What I’m noticing on “then because she goes” is what sounds like a deliberate use of micing techniques on drums (to me it sounds like a minimal micing setup maybe even mono overheads?) to emulate the sounds of the bands that likely influenced it. Have to say these guys really fully committed sonically to everything they do. Those fat tape sounding drum tones on roadkill and the crunchy guitars. Also I absolutely love how phoebes voice layers in both of those songs.
Opening the album with Wake up! wake up! wake up! It’s Monday morning and we’ve only got a thousand of them left is a kick to the fucking teeth. A big pop leaning band opening their fourth album with a punk song is a welcome surprise. Gets its message across so well. Floors me every time.
I like Frail State of Mind a lot more with People leading directly into it. Birthday Party too without Streaming. Man, this bums me out because I usually love their instrumental stuff.
If You're Too Shy - some solid Tears for Fears vibes god damn Edit: recorded the song at St. Elmo's Bar with Billy Hicks on sax, apparently.
I do it often to be honest. I just love this band so much. I saw them around this time last year and I am so sad we all have to wait for this album tour.
was supposed to see them with my friend for our (mutual) birthday in a couple weeks big sad. wonder what the setlist would have looked like
all right so I feel like my first playlist really really works for some reason, so i’m gonna share the order here for you heathens to pick apart lmao. I envision this as a more brisk, and straight-forward follow-up to ABIIOR. it’s relatively hook-y, sunny, and light and feels really aimed to please the fans of their more “rock band” style songs. I would say the drawback to this disc as a whole is I find myself missing the risky side of the band, it’s an insanely pleasant listen but feels kinda safe, and I just generally value variety with this band a ton (whereas most other’s I’m more concerned with consistency). ((BOOT WORLD)): 1. The 1975 2. People 3. Then Because She Goes 4. Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America 5. Streaming 6. The Birthday Party 7. Roadkill 8. Me & You Together Song 9. Playing On My Mind 10. Guys
Some more thoughts, 7-8 listens on: - "Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy)" has easily gotten more plays since the leak than a handful of the singles (People, JC2005, FSOM I barely listened to honestly) - "Frail State of Mind" is much better in context with the record. I never used to really click with the house stuff referenced on earlier material as much as your typical '75 banger but god damn all of that stuff on this is so good. I even started listening to Burial. - "What Should I Say" and "Yeah I Know" feel like they come from a similar place. I also need like a whole album of WSIS. - Speaking of WSIS, I also loved how it was described as "melted Justin Bieber" cause this song immediately reminds me of that What Do You Mean song.
