Has it not been mentioned the strings in the End interpolating the melody from Lostmyhead? It's a rework of HNSCC but I'm almost positive that melody at one point is directly from Lostmyhead. Related: I really really wish the End directly tied into Frail State of Mind instead of ending, then Frail fades up. The direct link from Streaming to TBP makes the stop start between End and Frail more noticeable to me. Feel like it would've given a bit more fluidity to the sequence.
I understand Jason completely when he says the loops just loop a bit long and don't really have the intended effect in certain areas of the record. In that regard so of it does seem filler-y
I'm holding out til Friday but have been reading through the forum. I feel like if the 1975 thought the track-list was best laid out the way it was, than who cares about anyone's opinion on the order lol.
I think the sequence of the birthday party -> yeah I know -> then because she goes -> jc2005 sucks. they're 4 good songs that don't work in that sequence for me. well I can take or leave yeah I know. Honestly I think the whole first half of this album is a mess the more I think and the more I listen to it.
my main contention with Jason’s arguments is that I do, personally, think the arrangements are good and evocative. they really, really strike an emotional chord in me and that’s what matters imo. I get that he has been married to/in a relationship with a classical musician for years and years and is more enveloped in that world than I am— but personally, I’m still a musician of at least moderate skill at what I do, I would say, and I find pretty much all the arrangements and production on this record to really land for me. there’s always something catching my ear at any given time. not everyone has a foot in the classical world and this is ostensibly a pop band, so it makes sense that their orchestral pieces wouldn’t hold up in certain regards to actual, dedicated classical artists. I don’t mean that to say they’re above criticism and Jason can’t find the arrangements simplistic or not engaging, as someone who has more of a footing in that world, but I also would argue that I don’t think that’s the one, true lens to view things under (or that there ever is or will be one true lens to view things under). if anything, I hope George and/or Matty see those criticisms and take them as a challenge to just get better at those aspects of their sound (which they’re obviously fully capable of). anyway, I think this could be a very successful album w/r/t getting their fans into more of the music/musicians that they’re drawing influence from, more so than any of their others, and that’s its own accomplishment, (the orchestral stuff here makes me want to seek out more orchestral stuff) I think that’s sick. I also now want to listen to more Eno, to Reich, to Burial, to The Streets, etc etc etc. I feel like they kinda gave me the keys to unlocking a ton of music that may have been previously out of my taste range entirely. the span of influence this band has had, and will probably always have, on their fanbase’s tastes is pretty huge. whatever criticisms they warrant, I am so so so glad they exist bc for me they just promote such a pure love and admiration for music as an art (and as product let’s be honest), and that’s just so nice to have in a major popular band in 2020.
It just becomes harder and harder to discern if I just don't like the singles they release because it's always counter to what I want to hear from them or because I genuinely dislike them. I often find that I end up liking/warming up to more than half of them months after the release. You'd think I'd learn to adjust my expectations to expect anything from them at this point, but nonetheless...
This album flows pretty perfectly to me, If You're Too Shy kinda sticks out but I don't think there would be a solid spot for that anywhere and it's such a damn good song I don't mind
It’s a good record, but I feel like the older this band gets, the harder they try to really hammer down this youthful, young sounding vibe, and it just feels more and more forced. S/T really felt like a record made for (and by) being like 21, going out into the real world and having all these new experiences, but Notes just feels like a record made by a 30 year old that wants to pretend they’re still 19. I think a lot of that might have to also do with how Matty is on socials, and the clothes they wear too, but on songs like Me and You Together Song and The Birthday Party, it really sounds like they’re trying to force an aesthetic that just isn’t genuine. not sure if that makes sense, but it’s something I’ve noticed over the last few records. Still a super great band though.
I think the record is a "fine" listen - with a few strong highlights/surprises that I think will prove pivotal in their catalogue - but after 10-15 listens it certainly is my least favorite record by them. Having said that, I don't even listen to ILW from front to back anymore so knowing I probably won't go back and consume it as a whole effort later on down the line, doesn't serve as a big knock to me personally.
I mean I think everything Matty does is "forced" or "trite" but it doesn't impact my view of the tunes. I don't think he's trying to be a kid - I think he's very intelligent but socially/emotionally stunted - oh! and corny af lol
If this record makes people want to listen to Steve Reich, then it is a complete success, in my opinion
no shade intended tho. I do wanna say that I never really feel like the “looping” on this album is excessive and I don’t think anything ever even feels like a simple loop, it always feel like something is happening or changing/evolving to me idk. maybe I just haven’t spent enough time with it yet for it to bore me. their music has always been loop/repetition oriented and that was ALWAYS the biggest complaint ppl had when I’d play songs from S/T especially. it’s present in everything, and it gives their music that seems so disparate in terms of genre a connective tissue imo bc it ends up lending a droning quality to even their poppiest songs.
I could not disagree with this more. Matty is genuinely into super niche music and has always been into that. This is just him finally really making it into his own.

I did put on ABI and its crazy how much that grew on me. It remains to be seen if some of the weirder parts of this record grow on me the way that record did.
I mean maybe he's not super fake, but idk, I always get to thinking: the one in the room self professing how real/genuine/woke they are is probably the fakest of all. He's a dude, playing a dude, whose playing a genuine front man hahah
