Hahaha I like this for the most part. And I know everyone was shitting on @bradsonemanband for doing it so quickly, but I can't think of an album is recent memory that begs to be resequenced like this one does.
But it's not even comparable to when they did that before, like with "The Sound." I don't feel they flow.
Can you explain how? On my third listen and I want to skip "The End" so badly because of its placement. I wish it had some motif from People or Frail (or both!). To undercut myself, someone said that the album really starts with "The End", with the first two tracks serving as larger context for the whole record, which sounds nice and works from a philosophical perspective but doesn't help me enjoy "The End" any more, even if it's a nice enough track on its own.
Yeah it’s a tough start, and it doesn’t help that they’re not really very good or interesting arrangements. Woulda loved something more like “How to Draw” there ... the originality and creativity they can bring to those kinds songs just isn’t the same as what they did with an orchestra. Cause *those* kinda composers are just on a different level. Different skill sets and musical backgrounds. (Also what I get for being surrounded by classical music for the last 8 years.) If they wanted to go this direction I wish they woulda worked with some of the contemporary composers that are to that kinda music as The 1975 is to theirs.
well for one thing idk why everyone is so worked up over this pretty orchestral instrumental. does it need another song's motif? this band isn't coheed
This has been holding my attention much better than ABI, there's nothing I'd skip from sounding bloaty. Only stuff I feel conflicted listening to because of the lyrics. Also feel strongly that they delivered on their statements that there's a lot that sounds like the eps. It's like they took everything they learned as producers and songwriters, returned to that vibe and gave it a more mature form. Still there's this feeling I'm starting to outgrow this band. Also, Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy) has a nice city pop influence to it.
well as the last few pages have borne out i don't really understand where jason's coming from either it's this lovely ambient collision of strings also i'm just noticing there are motifs from other 1975 songs in it! it sounds like "lostmyhead"
I def see myself still listening to this in sequence in the future bc overall I enjoy that aspect of it minus a hiccup here and there (which, like, come on, this isn’t an easy batch of songs to try and sequence whatsoever), but I think I’ll have fun playing with the tracklisting in different ways with playlists and stuff. I’m already trying to break it down into 2 “albums” rn and it’s a fun experiment, but no matter what, something I like about the existing flow is compromised.
And I don’t think people are “worked up” by wanting to talk about songs on an album from their favorite band. Haha, like, critiquing and offering thoughts on music is kinda what we do? And the third track on the album is one that I think has some pretty apparent flaws as a song on the album, cause it sounds kinda like an undergrad student heard “Appalachian Spring” for the first time and gave it a poor go. Heh.
I really like how it sounds it just kills the momentum from People. Then Streaming slows it back down again, it takes 16 minutes before we even get to the third proper song. Just an awkward start to an album imo.
I feel like this album is successful at what it tries to do and I love it wholeheartedly. I enjoy reading what other people are enjoying from it. Long conversations about why it is or isn’t successful make me not want to read the thread anymore though. I’m all for having in-depth discussions but it seems like whether you personally feel it is “successful” or not is cut and dry and that a discussion probably won’t change anyone’s mind on that basic opinion.
it would never occur to me to listen to an orchestral instrumental from the 1975 and think "well this isn't copland so whatever"
