I've been quite nice in my posts, but honestly this is how I felt after my first listen. On my second, I couldn't stop thinking about how bored I was.
There are some really great songs here and there (I really loved "If You're Too Shy," in particular), but a lot of it just feels like less successful retreads of things we've heard in the past. And my lord, this thing feels endless.
I’m slightly more positive about it but I literally had to nap after I listened yesterday and this morning I had to change it halfway through my commute because it was putting me to sleep :(
what constitutes a retread here? "nothing revealed" is in the same universe as "sincerity as scary" but i'd say that's about it? they've never made a song like "what should i say" before
Agreed, there's a few outstanding songs (Shy, What Should I Say, as two examples) but as I mentioned earlier, this album feels like a 45/50 minute album stretched out to 80 minutes.
I mean, it was just my first listen, but a lot of this sounded very similar to A Brief Inquiry to me. I'll have to listen a few more times to answer your question more specifically. There is definitely a "quantity over quality" problem here.
This band will always have the issue that they are so self referential that when ever they reuse a melody/beat/sound its hard to tell if its purposely referencing previous songs, or a "retread". I also dont think much on here is a retread of anything. If anything the only song that qualifies to that would be Shy, as thats them sitting comfortably in that pop pocket they always have succeeded in. Anyways, that 2nd verse on I think Theres Something You Should know HITS. Easily my fav moment as of right now.
I really like how George records a piano. IDK if he puts the mic really close to the strings or whatever, but there's always a very dry, percussive element to it.
Too Shy is the only song on this record I would call a retread tbh When have they ever done something like Shiny Collarbone? Bagsby? Roadkill? I could just list almost every song lol.
I've said it before and I will say it again, this band is exactly like if Ween sang about their feelings and this album is pretty much exactly like that lol Like a modern Quebec
