As someone who is gay and who spent my first two years of college living with evangelical Christians and (mostly) believing what they believed and listening to them tell me they’d pray for me and support me if I tried to change aka stop being gay, I both appreciate this song for trying to show the hypocrisy of people like that while also, like RyanRyan said, not feeling good at all when hearing those opening lines.
Yeah those lyrics definitely make me feel cringe as well but the discomfort it provokes seems intentional in context... similar to the way I felt when I heard if I believe you with the “asking you jeeeeeeeesus” part
Haha yeah and the line that follows the same melody with the smell of her hair reminds me of her feet
...what is goin on with those lyrics Phoebe sings, cos if Matty wrote those they are creepy as all fuck
Has Matty ever come out and explicitly said that he's heavily influenced by Bon Iver? Because it just becomes more and more apparent. The sax parts literally sound like they were written/played by Mike Lewis. Really really like this song
Tape Notes podcast and a few other long interviews about ABIIOR mention using similar techniques to Bon Iver on How To Draw, so if not explicitly stated, it's probably there.
Bon Iver was also brought up as an influence when they covered “By Your Side”. The 1975 release Bon Iver-influenced cover of Sade’s “By Your Side” to raise money for War Child
They’ve cast such a wide net on this album already, with the variety of sounds they’re going for... I can’t even fathom what else we’re going to get out of what, the other 16 tracks we haven’t heard yet?
Really loving everything so far from the album, but there’s two types of songs I am fixing for: 80s bops and jazzy tunes
Too Shy is that 80’s bop and I’m sure that soulful Temptations style song will scratch that soul/jazzy itch
Do you mean from a production standpoint? Because I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that George didn’t record drums for that song
Is this accurate or sourced from anywhere? Found this on wikipedia. "Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy)" (written by: M. Healy, Daniel, McDonald, Hann, Guendoline Viray, Rome Gomez, Hiroshi Sato)
If that's true its going to be my bop for sure also if you recognize matty without recognizing george you're dead to me
The only song I know he didn't track drums on is Heads and Bodies, Matty did I believe. I do mean from a production standpoint for sure, and the drums add a ton of vibe that I think contribute to the success of the song. The trumpet (which was Roy Hargrove) is another shining spot. Idk, really just the whole atmosphere feels George to me. Also, I'm not sure who played piano, but those higher melodies feel more in line with Georges sense of melody based off of what I know are his contributions. This is all conjecture and opinion, I don't know for sure who played what where. Just thought worth mentioning I find Georges contribution to the track being so great just as important as Matty's.
