Depends where you ask I guess. Here on this site? Bigger than ever before. General population? I guess same as last year? Irthesteve's personal friends and family? Only like, two people I know listen to them. Probably doesn't help answer your question haha
Nah it's fine lol... I mean, their shows are as big as ever so I guess that's a good indicator. But again, like within my observable sphere, it seems like people are just kinda not as into it or paying much attention anymore I guess... They're as eclectic of a band as ever... nobody really knows what they're going to do next, and so I guess for the people that really liked the first record, for instance, they aren't really doing that sort of thing as much these days, and they're exploring a lot of lesser known or appreciated styles of music. It's not really an "80's John Hughes soundtrack" type of thing anymore, ya know? I mean, when they came out with that sound in 2013, people were going nuts for it, like they were the next big thing. I don't fault The 1975 for that at all, I'm happy to see them experimenting with new directions and sounds, but it seems like a lot of people sort of... like what they like. Something new or an unexpected shift comes around that challenges their ear or what they perceive as good music, and suddenly it's a polarizing thing, ya know? Idk...
There's a bunch of bands that have copied that sound and do it well enough so if people just want that they can still get it. The 1975 continue to grow and evolve and although some fans aren't into it I think there's obviously even more who are and they're picking up a lot of new fans along the way who didn't think much of the first album. If they were still making tunes that sounded like that first album I wouldn't be anywhere near as into them.
Personally the hype fell off for me in a big way during the long rollout for A Brief Inquiry. I'm not exactly sure why. It took a good year for ILIWYS to click for me and I guess I wasn't prepared to invest that time with the promise of Notes on the way. I've also been very confused about the rollout for Notes and I had to double check that it didn't get released while i wasn't paying attention. Oh, and Matty routinely being obnoxious in the press doesn't help but I guess I signed up for that as a 1975 fan.
I feel like once Notes is *properly* announced the hype will be back in full swing for the majority of ppl and I also have a feeling this will be their most celebrated album (at least critically) yet.
Yeah my hype has died down a bit, but that's to be expected. I haven't been able to catch them on tour, and they are between albums. Can't be too excited when there isn't much going on to get me excited, haha.
The 8 month rollout doesn’t work for me personally, hype wise. But I’ll for sure be excited and probably love it a whole lot when it comes out.
listened to FSOM this morning to get some hype into my veins - the transition into the "what's your vibe" verse is just absolutely incredible. I can never get over how this band just knows how to create moments from nothing
Same! They opened with “People” in denver but honestly can’t wait to see them play it again. I wanted to be more into the show for that song because it is such a banger. But they were phenomenal, I just wish they didn’t hype for so long
Got up early this AM and listened to all 3 albums in a row. It was a hell of an experience. Maybe the most exciting band working for me. I hadn’t listened to Sleep in its entirety in a while and it still gave me all the feelings. All of them.
