I wish my dad was still around to hear this album… some of my earliest and formative memories involving music was hearing him play stuff like Genesis, Phil Collins, Sting, U2, around the house… and stuff like Earth Wind and Fire as well… Now fast-forward, The 1975 is here recording in Peter Gabriel’s studio in 2022, and sounding like an amalgamation of all these influences (and more) in a more wholistic way than ever before… Just some uncanny parallels, yet it’s contemporary and they do it in such a forward-thinking sort of way. It’s fun to think about… like these guys are our generation’s equivalent to all of that type of thing.
I know we keep mentioning With or Without You but every time I hear Matty start that first line on About You I think he's gonna sing "I, I wish I could swim..."
Man, I probably won't be able to listen to this the way that I like to hear new albums I've been anticipated for a couple days, but I also don't want that first experience jeopardized so I've gotta be strong. You guys are making that fucking hard though, this sounds incredible
Yeah more so with this band than others, the first listen needs to be a headphones or nice speaker listen. Not really a first listen in the car or in the background kind of band.
Also think this demands to be listened to fully though, top to bottom. It flows and builds so beautifully in sequence.
I wonder if this will be the album that finally breaks them completely in America. I feel like they’re quite popular here but they haven’t had a full breakthrough yet like Dua Lipa or Harry Styles. It would be cool to see for sure.
Some annotations on Genius are really insightful and some are just so cringe like someone practicing for their English Literature GCSE exam The lyric will be like ‘Hey’ and the comment is “With this line Healy contrasts the whimsical nature of the….”
This band lost me a bit with releases after ILIWYS... but god damn this record is flawless. What a first listen. Headphones and chilly walk listen coming up after work.
She's cool and all, but I don't own any of her albums and I've never seen her live. I own every 1975 album, went to two tours and tell anyone and everyone I know about this band 24/7.
