In that doom podcast, Matty dropping Glassjaw as one of like 3 examples of heavy music done properly was surprising.
Spent the last few weeks listening to their entire discography and ranked every song on Saturday because that’s what no plans does to a mfer Can say with confidence that ILIWYS is my favorite with ABIIOR coming in second
ILIWYS NOACF BFIAFL S/T ABIIOR probably… S/T and ABIIOR is a toss up. BFIAFL is great but ironically its greatest strength (it’s an incredibly concise record by their standards and feels like the band really leans mostly into one particular lane of their sound) is also a bit of a weakness for me. I prefer them when they’re more sprawling and genre hopping, even when some of those forays are better executed than others. that said it is a much better album experience for me than ABIIOR and S/T.
ABIIOR NOACF ILWYS S/T BFIAFL I like this album but the back half is a bit disappointing to me, and the S/T slightly edges it out even if I don't really care to hear "The City" or "Chocolate" again. I also prefer chaotic 1975 albums, but I get having the opposite preference. It just feels part of their chronically-online-in-an-earnest-way vibe.
Funny to see this bumped as I've been on a kick the last few days and been missing having a tour of theirs to look forward to. I think my taste is all over the place and not at all consistent of the type of song that I like. Example, 'be my mistake' does absolutely nothing for me, but I love other ballad type songs like 'I couldn't be more in love' and 'If I believe you' and 'All I need to hear'. I also always think I'm over the self titled until I listen to the guitars. 'Noodly' riffs as I call them - like the guitar in 'Girls' and 'Chocolate' are always going to be amongst my faves, even if the vocals are 'rougher'. I probably rank ILIWYSFYASBYSUOI as my favorite as I like more songs off of it in general, but there are stronger songs on other albums if that makes sense. When they do tour again, I'd love to hear Love Me and Ugh on the setlist back to back as they are on the album. UGH! is 100% an all time top 10 for me.
a few of my absolute favorite songs by the band are on ABIIOR, but as an album experience it has never really worked for me and I don’t know if it ever will. part of that is that I played the absolute shit out of the singles leading up to the album, so some of them I had been so deeply familiar with for almost half of a year prior to the release of the album proper and so they just kinda feel separate from the album to me by nature. I think even besides that I would have issues with the record’s flow regardless tho. what’s funny tho is I don’t have the same kinds of issues with NOACF, even tho some of those songs we had even longer and that record is pretty infamous for some of its oddball sequencing choices. something about it just works for me more for whatever reason.
I like it when you sleep A brief inquiry Being funny Notes I never listen to self titled. I really like notes and it has some of my favorite songs but it’s bloated and too all over the place.
