I'm caught up and once again I'm a firm believer that there's an incredible amount of mental gymnastics and excuses that gets offered to Matty that no one else on this site, right now or even in my past 15 years on here, has received in case of controversies, and it continues to baffle me. And I say that as a fan of the band, one who's just totally over the discourse and think the easiest solution would be for him to simply get out of the spotlight and stick to the music for good, unless he shows he's truly changed. So far, he hasn't. Shit like this is unfortunately why I listen to them much less than I used to. And no, I won't accept anyone on here making a reactionary reply by telling it's my fault for being tuned in or extremely online. When I put on their music or it comes up on shuffle, I can't help but be reminded of all his antics. I just can't help it. I have strong feelings for many of them, and I'm not going to feel sorry for any of them.

At the end of the day, I just want him to listen and do better. He's a public figure that gets held to certain expectations, some fair, some unfair, but it's on him to make better use of his platform. It's all on him, really.

I hate when people say stuff like the "stick to the music " by the way, but it's become clear over the years he's not as smart as I initially thought he was, especially when he keeps making offensive remarks that lead to shitstorms and doesn't seem to manage criticism well.

The performance art bit I keep seeing irks me because it's kinda a self own, both for him and those defending him, isn't it? If his fans have to always remind everyone that he's in on some kind of joke... well for one, perhaps it shows there's a big discrepancy between the messages he wants to tell and how he actually executes them (spoiler alert: historically, not well!), and for two, if he doesn't make us part of his joke, then what's the point?

On a last note, instead of telling people to get over it or other insensitive, infantilizing, patronizing turns of phrases, I wish many on here would just show more empathy and compassion too. Perhaps this thread and many parts of the forum would finally become less hostile.

    Maybe so, maybe not.

This site needs to be studied.

By aliens so they get a better understanding of the human race?

"Oh, so that's why they're like this."

Thesis: Matty uses incendiary remarks to keep attention on his band just like the host of this site uses posts about said remarks to drive traffic/activity on his forums

Feel like that thesis is based on a faulty premise that Tate gives a shit about this.

And by "this" I mean leveraging controversy to drive traffic.

    I could be wrong, though!

p sure he was the one who posted the vid of the onstage rant that set off the “discussion.”

I am of the firm belief that Matthew has decided to permanently self destruct. He experienced what happens when you date the biggest cult leader on the planet, and his image is now irrevocably tainted. There is no recovering from such a public lashing.

He knows that his (and the band’s) popularity will wane after this tour, and is going out in a blaze of insanity.

My point still stands, I don't think he did it thinking it would drive "traffic", I think he did it because it's a known artist doing something dumb that warrants attention.

The former implies a calculated approach, the latter just requires a drive by execution.

I like to believe this stuff gets posted with the hope that people won't be disappointing about it, even though they so frequently are.

Not a bad point generally, I'd be surprised if they ever eclipsed their height of just before Taylor and during.

This last tour went on sale after the Taylor Swift thing and sold out bigger venues than their last tour??

Tbf most shows don’t even sell out for some of the even bigger acts. How packed was Pittsburgh? 80%? 90%? Not that bad for a group that hardly ever went mainstream in the US.

Saw many bands at Wells Fargo Center, which is a huge venue, and this last show there was the most packed I've seen it

I was at the Wells Fargo Center for the show a week and a half ago and I thought it was whack that the back quarter or third of the general admission floor was practically vacant despite it being a sold out show

Its been like that at other sold out shows I've been to, not sure why. Maybe if they have the duel stage setup they have a different cap because they know that'll get rushed

you’re arguing for a point that I wasn’t including in my joke thesis. it’s ok though since doing that has been the theme of this thread over the last few days. That said, I don’t know why anyone would post a comment on a thread aside from wanting to drive convo?

a lot of arena shows are like this. I think they want to prevent overcrowding of GA for safety reasons.
