This only reveals how hyper online this opinion is if you think no one listens or talks about Kanye anymore haha

I mean, of course no one says that him praising Hitler is a good thing, or something worthy of support. I think what some of us are saying, though, is that it's probably fair to say that there are a lot of people that can still acknowledge what he at one point meant to them, while still holding that his current views are horrible.

Whether or not that dictates if you can still listen to his music or not is ultimately your decision, and one that I think should be personal. I don't equate still listening to MBDTF sometimes with being a nazi. Not saying you directly are, but that does seem to be an online sentiment.

Frankly, the people in real life who I see stick their necks out the farthest for him are brockhampton ass white hypebeasts. He is largely irrelevant to my students, they think he’s, rightfully, a joke now

I had deluded friends who earnestly thought Kanye was infiltrating Trump and the MAGA movement to advance progressive causes back in like 2016-18 and I think even they wouldn’t call him a personal hero today

Those aren't really the kinds of people we're talking about, though. Kanye's music lives on with twenty-somethings in Philadelphia, I can say that with confidence.

Lol I entered the conversation just to say that yes, I think people would call Kanye an ignorant piece of shit to others in real life. Walking “into the middle of Chicago” doesn’t change that.

This whole conversation has just been:
"Nachos are one of my favorite foods, but I hate sour cream!"

"So you're saying you LOVE sour cream then?"

I think in 2023 the antisemitism is the first thing you have to grapple with if you’re gonna bring up Kanye West, it’s a pretty big and recent thing to set to the side to make a mundane point about self belief and complain about not being nominated for Grammys

Where at? I’m in a classroom with teenagers in Philly every day, and have been for a decade now, and his importance has only continued to decline with the youth. None of them were hype on Donda, we played God is King in class as a joke and ripped on it. The very few times he does come up, it is typically with the stipulation that he is ass now.

Like all of these broad strokes about how important he is to the black community or that you hear his songs out? When my black and brown students speak about him, they might still revere the old stuff (like I do) but they always add the caveat that he stinks now. So, again I disagree that you’d face any trouble talking shit on Ye basically anywhere

The discussion wasn't about whether or not his music is good now (I don't think it is), the discussion is weather or not somebody can still find something about Kanye redeeming. Which imo, you can. I think that's something the younger generations missed with Kanye since if your in highschools he's pretty much been crazy and dropping mid music your whole life.

The discussion that I am taking part in is whether or not I can call Kanye a piece of shit in real life and not face repercussions (because of his influence on the black community? I guess is your point?). I can, I do on a pretty regular basis. Just because suburban white kids at like Temple or Lasalle are talking about how dope Donda was doesn’t mean I can’t.

you said something dumb, I’m arguing about that dumb thing. I don’t care what your other points are.

It is weird that two (I assume) white posters are attempting to defend the problematic shit Kanye has done by speaking about his influence on the black community. No doubt he has had a tremendous impact on the community, it’d be insane to argue otherwise. But to act like black people don’t also agree that he’s lost his mind or is a complete joke…that’s ridiculous too. And then to take it to the level that I’d be, like, scared to say it in Chicago? Just a weird argument to make

I never said you couldnt call him a piece of shit, I said very specifically you probably wouldnt call other people pieces of shit for not being as extremely negative on Kanye as you are. I think that was pretty clear and not dumb!

If someone said they still supported Kanye West without the caveat that he’s a nazi piece of shit, I absolutely would? What is so hard to understand about this

You do realize people are more mad that a very famous person is using his stage to call Kanye his hero, caveat about the nazi shit or not. Me (or your weird hypothetical Chicagoan) saying “Kanye is a nazi but he had some hits though” would not have the same blowback

On top of that all, Matty is doing it specifically for the controversy. Do I think he’s a nazi? No. Is he a dumb irresponsible obnoxious asshole? Yes

It’s also just very weird to say besides all the antisemitic stuff I still really love Kanye. Keep that shit to yourself. Listen to him if you want but seems super strange to need to tell everyone about it.

It's weird how far out of their way people are willing to go to not admit when someone they're a fan of made a mistake. It's like they're worried it reflects badly on them or something.

I mean, if you keep going to shows hosted by someone like Matty while all of this information about him is in public view, I’m just gonna assume you either agree with his violent racism or don’t care enough to draw a line.
