My take is that I don’t begrudge people who remain fans of Brand New even when Jesse is a groomer. I also understand how someone can say that about Kanye but also say “yeah, he’s a bigot”.

My opinion is every time someone acts excessively offended by him is that they’re taking the piss, further proving the point he and the band are going for. Americans truly take the piss square in the mouth.

 

Who determines what constitutes "excess" in this case?

You'll be much happier if you don't expect every artist and person with an Internet connection to agree with you on every single ideological issue. Kanye is also important to me, I have no problem saying that, doesn't mean I agree with everything he says. Don't think it's terribly complicated or fucked up. If Matty had said "Kanye is one of my heroes BECAUSE of his antisemitic remarks" I might understand the outrage.

But would you get up on a stage in front of thousands of people, many of whom might be Jewish people, and say to their faces that he’s your hero? Really ask yourself that. Despite all of the awful things Kanye has said/done/supported in the last decade, do you genuinely feel that’s an appropriate thing for anybody to be doing?

 

His intentions were completely clear, you can choose to give it the most uncharitable reading if you want to. But he was not supporting his antisemitism, because he specifically said that.
