My thing with Matty is that I do think he is a decent human being but he's also ignorant. Those can both occur at the same time.
Someone else said a few pages ago about Tom Delonge being able to say the R word but not Matty. Matty is and has always been a dick. Nothing he's done is that bad. He's done the kind of stuff that most people probably encounter in friendship groups fairly regularly.
I tend to agree with this. I don’t agree with certain things he’s said and I wouldn’t say them, but they’ve essentially been jokes in poor taste. I would prefer he would stop and it does annoy me, but there are people saying overtly hateful shit in this world. He’s a dumbass, but to act like he’s the most he’s awful, hateful person in the world is a stretch.
I would argue that a person with his visibility making these tasteless jokes and not learning from his mistakes gives other people incentive to do the same and put their bare ass out for everyone to see. The more we normalize this kind of behavior, the worse it's going to get. People with Matt's spotlight should be trying to set an example, not add to the bullshit.
The “I don’t condone it but it’s fine if he does it” defense continues to be so weird. Y’all are allowed to be mad at a person for r-wording! And if your friends are doing it you’re allowed to be mad at them too! They don’t need a pass just because there are worse things they could do! Wtf are we even doing here
Not everyone lives in a perfect world where their friends are perfect people. I don’t use slurs myself as I do think they’re harmful, but I also lived through a time where it was very normal in popular culture to use the word. I’d be surprised if you’d never said the word ever in your life. It’s all great to be virtue signalling on the internet but we all know that’s not how the real world works. It’s okay to call him out on it, but it’s a bit absurd to me that it would be enough to treat him like he sexually assaulted someone, which is how some people in this thread come across.
I just think it’s important to hold people with a platform to a higher standard than our dumb friends and family members (you can call them out too though!)
He has been told over and over that he's making mistakes and shows no real remorse or desire to change. Seems like a real shitty dude. Not a criminal, but also not ignorant. He's aware of his shortcomings but has no desire to change. The idol worship blinders for this guy and band are ... a lot.
So you’re just going to ignore that Tom has repeatedly said the r-word recently and say people have blinders on with him as your profile pic?
I’ve literally heard nothing about this. If you’d like to point me in the direction to read something, I’ll read it. I will add that your post sounds pretty defensive of Matty in a WHAT ABOUT X way that sort of proves my point.
It was brought up by someone on this page alone. And no, I’m not defending Matty. You’re free to read the thread and see what I’ve said on the matter. Just don’t see the point of accusing others of idol worship and having blinders when you clearly don’t count yourself.
I mean, he apologized a bunch at the first show. it just wasn't a news story in many places. Matty Healy apologises again for his 'offensive' behaviour after announcing The 1975's indefinite hiatus: 'It was a misguided attempt at being a rock star' | Daily Mail Online
'Sorry, but it was performance art' is a pathetic excuse. Not to mention the constant digs he's made at the people calling him out during their last tour, only to now make excuses for it all. While I'm sceptical about his apology, I hope it's at least an indication that he's going to stop his bullshit going forward. This band means a lot to me and I'm just exhausted with him now.
For what it's worth it's always been frowned upon up use the R word in the UK. It's always been out of bounds. Whereas in the US it's one of those words that was used a lot 15-20 years ago but people have learnt over time to not use it.
A friend at the show tonight posted this to her insta story and it immediately looked familiar. Maybe intentional, maybe not, kinda cool either way
