What irks me is the people saying they should've done something less obstructive, like not perform or do donation. The message is the obstruction, and that's what makes it effective.
Yea this is actually great. Anyone suggesting otherwise should fuck right off. Good on Matty and the band, big time props, very cool.
does that "fuck right off" extend to local LGBT rights activists https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/07/23/malaysia-1975-matty-healy-kiss/
I don’t believe he did anything wrong, but there is a big sense of white savior complex here. He can safely leave the country and not worry about the consequence of his actions. However, with elections right around the corner, you better believe Malaysia’s government will use this event as a way to scapegoat the queer community. It was performative, and in the end didn’t help the local queer community one bit.
There's only one activist quoted in that article, and they say that they appreciated his actions and is just concerned Healy is leaving them to deal with the consequences of the political situation they're in. They aren't against the action, they're concerned about the timing.
What is your stake in this? What would you like to see happen in Malaysia? Which side are you on in terms of LGBT+ rights?
On a lighter note, put on Being Funny In A Foreign Language for the first time in a while last night, still great!
“About You” has turned into my warm-up / pre-run song. It just puts me in such a calm mood and helps me not start out like a streak of shit and crash later.
Just so everyone knows, my Dad thinks the lead singer is an idiot who ruined the festival, and hes seen online that the majority are mad that they ruined the festival for everyone with a senseless, idiotic protest (dont know where he read that). However, he also thinks the fest is wrong for cancelling, and they should have just thrown "the singer" in jail (10 years or whatever their penalty is) and let the other bands rock on. Paraphrasing of course.
I'm starting to just be out on this band as a whole. I've been active in 1975 threads since I joined the site in 2017 but I just can't stand Matty anymore. Even if excuses can be made I just prefer to listen to artists whose public persona isn't completely exhausting. It has been fun (mostly).
