Yeah… honestly I used to be massively into The 1975 but Matty has consistently turned me off from the band over the last few years. This sucks for Rina. ‘I’ve had enough’: pop star Rina Sawayama criticises comments by labelmate Matty Healy | Rina Sawayama | The Guardian
Don’t think she’s specifically taking issue with someone owning her masters, just that a dickhead owns hers
I’d rather Dirty Hit own my masters than almost any other label to be honest. Probably the best label to be on if you want a chance at getting them back too. Very artist friendly deals compared to most of what’s out there these days. And I think the 1975 guys own less than 4% each of the shares.
It seems pretty clear that she’s not upset about her masters being owned by someone else and more that they’re owned by a person who publicly mocked an asian woman when she herself is also an asian woman
Yeah I mean again, I've loved this band's last few records, but this is such a valid complaint and it is insane to see other fans doing mental gymnastics around it. Just acknowledge that mocking Asian people is a) terrible, always, and b) especially when you're a straight white man with multiple Asian women signed to your label. Good lord
At this point he’s been eating shit over this for months, just genuinely apologize instead of doubling down on the frat boy schtick and half this drama goes away
I think it genuinely is quite interesting, and has been raised before, how willing people can be to overlook or explain away those things, but how quick to cancel other people we are on this site. But it’s also interesting that he had a relationship with Taylor afterwards, and had guested/co-written on the Japanese House single too.
I don’t really see anyone here cutting him slack. At the same time, those we’re quick to “cancel” around here are for genuine illegal behavior, not being a racist dope, regardless of how flippant he’s trying to be or not.
I’m sure people have been cancelled or in the accountability thread who haven’t done anything illegal..
Who the fuck has been cancelled? Is there anyone we talk about on this site that has lost their career and devoted following as a result of heinous acts that they’ve done?
I haven’t listened to the podcast but I can guarantee you that anyone who this site has canceled has done something far worse than what people are upset about regarding matty healy. Not saying they don’t have a right to be angry, because they absolutely do, but there is a clear difference between what the artists we shun around here have done and anything matty has done thus far
I mean, there’s at least one extremely obvious one that I don’t feel the need to name. There’s also Dogleg, among others.
I refuse to believe, if Brand New announced a comeback, that the vast majority of their fanbase wouldn’t welcome them back with open arms This website is not the determining factor of who is “cancelled” and who is not.
I’m sure that’s probably somewhat true, unfortunately; I see a lot of people talk about No Pressure on Reddit, and I’ve never once seen someone post about Corrigan being in the band. It’s gross. But Brand New quite literally did lose their career at the time, and on this site nobody openly talks about them, which I do think would remain the same even if they released something new. (Of course, who’s to say what would’ve happened if they just ignored everything and kept being a band.)
Not to mention I wish people would stop throwing the word “canceled” around as if it even means anything when the overwhelming majority of people I see being discussed as worthy of being “cancelled” never lose their platforms and likely never change their behavior. Meanwhile, right-wing extremists are openly stating and doing pretty much whatever the fuck they want to directly oppose “cancel culture” and it’s quickly become a horrifying world to live it as a result. I think there are valuable discussions to be had and Matty is absolutely worthy and deserving of criticisms for the shitty things he’s done and said, but I take issue with the stance of “Interesting that this website picks and chooses who to cancel and who not to” as if anyone with a platform worth mentioning has ever actually lost it.
Isn't this just raising awareness that he's impacted people through his dumb words/actions, including an artist that is well supported on this site and that he should just fucking apologise? Not everything related to being held to accountability should be labelled as cancelling.
