Every time I see Fiddler's, it's just a "sigh..." reaction. I just don't like that venue, and they get so many good shows.
true but the organization of the 1975 is not necessarily run only by matty and he even says he doesn’t understand money in that video, the people who do understand money and make those money decisions probably pushed them into the pricing
The "choice" is often "do you want to do the tour or not" - most bands are not offered the option to remove dynamic pricing from their tour. They're offered a tour and more often than not it's based on around estimates that include dynamic pricing, without it, the tour doesn't make "enough" money for the promoter, and so its inclusion is a prerequisite to getting the venues/promoter/etc. even offered to the band to accept in the first place. Size of your band, power you/your team has, and what the numbers actually are for the estimated profits, go a long way into the calculus of if you have the sway to not use it. For example, Yellowcard and their current tour: not enough sway. Some interesting context for the monopoly and profit driven motivations of the concert industry.
I assume if an act wants to take a lower guarantee they COULD theoretically opt out (or price at market value). For The 1975, I imagine production costs/crew are quite expensive coming from the UK so the platinum opt-in helps offset that.
In general, the enmity should be directed at the large corporate entities that make it prohibitively difficult or even impossible to charge only "forty or fifty quid" for a gig to begin with.
I mean The 1975 played smaller venues last fall/winter. Dynamic pricing sucks so much. I know it’s not always in their control, but I have a lot of respect for the artists that fight it. The first time I saw it was last fall when blink went on sale, so hopefully bands start hearing about the backlash to it.
It's been a few months since I talked to anyone about it, and the size of the bands the people I would talk to work with are on a smaller scale, but the numbers were something like losing over 1/2 the guarantee (making a 4-5 person tour virtually impossible for anyone with a family) and risked upsetting the virtual monopoly for these sized venues in the states, making any future tour also unlikely.
That makes sense. Sounds like basically the entire risk falls to the band without it. So unless you are playing venues you are confident about selling out, I doubt they do it.
Why would anyone gamble on people showing up or not after the last 3 years? Make the money while you can because you never know what’s going to happen.
